Lead Diesel Mechanic/Heavy Equipment Mechanic

Daniels Inc of Garner
Garner, NC Full Time
POSTED ON 8/7/2026
AVAILABLE BEFORE 12/4/2026

Overview

Daniel’s Inc. of Garner is seeking an experienced Lead Diesel Mechanic / Heavy Equipment Mechanic to serve as the primary mechanic at our shop.

This is a hands-on position for someone who is comfortable working on a wide variety of equipment rather than the same type of vehicle every day. Our fleet includes heavy-duty trucks, dump trucks, tractor-trailers, construction equipment, trailers, and light/medium-duty company vehicles.

The ideal candidate will be a well-rounded mechanic who can diagnose problems, perform preventive maintenance, make repairs, troubleshoot electrical and hydraulic systems, and help keep our fleet and equipment operational.

Because this position will serve as the main mechanic in the shop, we are looking for someone who can work independently, prioritize repairs, identify problems before they become major failures, and communicate with management regarding equipment condition and repair needs.

Responsibilities

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Diagnose, repair, and maintain diesel-powered trucks and construction equipment
  • Service and repair dump trucks, tractor-trailers, and other heavy-duty commercial vehicles
  • Service and repair paving and construction equipment
  • Perform maintenance and repairs on company pickup trucks and other light/medium-duty vehicles
  • Inspect, diagnose, and repair trailers, including brakes, suspension, lighting, wiring, and related components
  • Perform routine preventive maintenance, including oil changes, filters, lubrication, fluid services, belts, hoses, and inspections
  • Diagnose diesel engine performance problems
  • Diagnose and repair air brake systems
  • Diagnose and repair hydraulic systems
  • Troubleshoot electrical and wiring issues
  • Diagnose starting, charging, battery, and alternator problems
  • Perform brake, suspension, steering, wheel-end, and drivetrain repairs
  • Identify worn or failing components before they result in breakdowns
  • Use diagnostic equipment and service information to troubleshoot problems
  • Respond to equipment breakdowns and assist with field repairs when necessary
  • Determine which repairs are most urgent and prioritize work accordingly
  • Communicate with operators and drivers to determine equipment problems
  • Communicate repair status, parts needs, and major mechanical concerns to management
  • Assist with ordering and identifying replacement parts
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area
  • Maintain accurate records of maintenance and repairs performed
  • Help establish and maintain preventive maintenance schedules for company equipment
  • Ensure trucks and equipment are safe and ready for operation
  • Work with outside dealerships, vendors, and repair facilities when specialized repairs are required
  • Help prevent unnecessary downtime by staying ahead of maintenance and mechanical problems

Equipment You May Work On

Our operation includes a diverse fleet, so applicants should be comfortable working across multiple types of equipment, including:

  • Dump trucks
  • Semi-trucks / road tractors
  • Lowboy and equipment trailers
  • Pickup trucks and company vehicles
  • Asphalt pavers
  • Milling machines
  • Rollers
  • Sweepers
  • Skid steers
  • Loaders
  • Excavators
  • Construction support equipment
  • Small engines and miscellaneous equipment

Experience with CAT, Freightliner, Kenworth, Peterbilt, Mack, International, GMC/Chevrolet, Wirtgen, Weiler, LeeBoy, or similar equipment is a plus but is not required.

Qualifications

Required

  • Previous professional diesel, heavy truck, or heavy equipment mechanic experience
  • Strong mechanical troubleshooting and diagnostic ability
  • Experience performing preventive maintenance and mechanical repairs
  • Ability to work independently without requiring constant supervision
  • Ability to prioritize multiple repairs based on operational needs
  • Knowledge of diesel engines and heavy-duty vehicle systems
  • Knowledge of brakes, suspension, steering, drivetrain, and electrical systems
  • Ability to safely use mechanic tools, diagnostic equipment, jacks, lifts, and shop equipment
  • Ability to identify parts and communicate parts needs
  • Valid driver's license
  • Dependable attendance and strong work ethic

Preferred

  • Experience with both heavy trucks and construction equipment
  • Experience diagnosing hydraulic systems
  • Experience with air brakes
  • Experience with diesel diagnostic software and scan tools
  • Welding and fabrication experience
  • Electrical diagnostic experience
  • CDL Class A or B
  • ASE or manufacturer certifications
  • Experience maintaining a mixed construction fleet
  • Experience with DOT/commercial vehicle inspections

Certifications are a plus, but hands-on experience, mechanical knowledge, and the ability to diagnose and repair equipment are more important to us than having a long list of certifications.

What We're Looking For

We are looking for someone who takes ownership of the shop and the equipment they are responsible for.

A successful candidate should be the type of mechanic who:

  • Notices when something doesn't sound or operate correctly
  • Troubleshoots the problem instead of simply replacing parts
  • Understands the importance of preventive maintenance
  • Can determine what needs to be repaired immediately versus what can be scheduled
  • Keeps management informed when equipment needs attention
  • Wants repairs performed correctly rather than temporarily patched
  • Understands that equipment downtime directly affects construction operations
  • Can transition from working on a pickup truck to a dump truck, tractor-trailer, or piece of construction equipment as needed

This position is ideal for an experienced mechanic who enjoys variety and wants to take a lead role in keeping an active paving company's fleet running.

Physical Requirements

This position requires the ability to:

  • Work indoors and outdoors
  • Work underneath and around trucks and heavy equipment
  • Bend, kneel, climb, stand, and work in various positions
  • Lift and handle heavy parts and tools
  • Work around diesel engines, hydraulic systems, oils, grease, and other typical shop conditions
  • Safely perform mechanical work in a construction and fleet maintenance environment

Schedule

Full-Time

Primary work will be performed in our Garner-area shop. Occasional field repairs or roadside/jobsite assistance may be required when equipment breaks down.

Some overtime may be necessary depending on workload and operational needs.

Compensation

Competitive pay based on experience, knowledge, and capabilities.

Applicants with strong heavy-truck, diesel, electrical, hydraulic, and heavy-equipment diagnostic experience will be compensated accordingly.
