Requirements for the Position
- A high school diploma
- The ability to work harmoniously with students and teachers
- Experience in organizational skills
- Knowledge of and/or experience with computers, preferred but not required.
- The individual's credentials are in compliance with all federal and state laws and regulations governing individuals functioning in the capacity of this position.
- Provide direct 1:1 support to the assigned student throughout the school day in accordance with the student's IEP and individual needs.
- Assist the student with functional academic instruction, including reading, communication, mathematics, money skills, time concepts, and other practical learning activities.
- Reinforce instruction and skills introduced by the special education teacher or other certified professional.
- Support instruction in daily living and independent living skills, including personal organization, hygiene, appropriate social behavior, meal routines, and other functional activities.
- Assist the student with communication skills, including the use of augmentative or alternative communication devices when applicable.
- Support the development of appropriate social skills and interactions with peers and adults.
- Implement accommodations, modifications, visual supports, schedules, reinforcement systems, and other strategies identified by the student's educational team.
- Assist with implementation of the student's behavior intervention or support plan, when applicable, under the direction of qualified staff.
- Support the student during classroom activities, transitions, lunch, recess, specials, vocational activities, community-based instruction, field trips, arrival, dismissal, and other school activities.
- Provide assistance with toileting, feeding, dressing, hygiene, mobility, positioning, and other personal-care needs, when required by the student's individual plan and when appropriately trained.
- Assist the student with adaptive equipment, assistive technology, mobility devices, or specialized materials as directed.
- Observe student performance and behavior and collect or document data as requested by the supervising teacher.
- Prompt and redirect the student appropriately while encouraging the student to complete tasks as independently as possible.
- Promote student independence by gradually reducing adult assistance when appropriate and as directed by the student's educational team.
- Maintain appropriate professional boundaries while providing consistent, supportive, and respectful assistance.
- Follow established health and safety procedures and respond appropriately to student needs or emergencies.
- Maintain confidentiality regarding student educational, behavioral, medical, and personal information.
- Communicate observations, concerns, progress, or changes in student behavior to the supervising teacher or appropriate staff.
- Participate in training and professional development related to the needs of students served within the Life Skills program.
- Perform other duties related to the position as assigned by the teacher or administrator.
