The Dane County Sheriff's Office has a current vacancy for the Limited Term Employee (LTE) Classification and Hearing Specialist position.

Limited Term Employees (LTEs) are limited to 1,200 hours in a payroll year and are not guaranteed any hours per week.

Note to applicants – for the 2026 budget year, there is a 1% reduction in wages. This is already reflected in the hourly wage above.

DEFINITION
Under general supervision, to perform the process of classifying jail residents, which includes assessment of security risks, housing cell assignments and program referrals, conducting administrative hearings, and to do related work as required.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
JAIL RESIDENT CLASSIFICATION FUNCTIONS:  Review resident criminal histories; review resident disciplinary histories; conduct resident interviews; compile data from historical records and results of resident interviews into a summary assessment form; recommend custody status based on the results of the assessment form; identify and make decisions and referrals based on special management concerns; identify and make decisions and referrals based on resident program needs; update file and computer records; update housing unit records; coordinate resident movement with sworn staff.

DISCIPLINARY HEARING FUNCTIONS:  Review resident disciplinary reports; review resident disciplinary history; conduct follow-up investigations, as needed; prepare necessary forms (notice, waivers, rights, etc.); explain disciplinary process and rights to resident involved; conduct informal hearings; arrange for formal hearings when required; make finding of resident innocence or guilt; determine appropriate discipline to be imposed; update resident file and computer records; update housing unit records; coordinate with Classification for reassessment/reclassification decisions.Education, Training and Experience:
Any combination of education, training and experience equivalent to a bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice or a related field. Plus, one (1) year professional experience involving a correctional or jail setting.

Special Requirements
This position requires weekend/holiday assignments (rotating basis). Successful applicants must be able to pass an extensive background investigation prior to employment. Also refer to the “Physical and Environmental Work Requirements” section below.”

Background Check Statement: Some positions may require a criminal background check which can include fingerprinting due to the nature of the job’s responsibilities. Wisconsin’s Fair Employment Law, s. 111.31 – 111.395, Wis. Stats., prohibits discrimination because of an arrest or conviction record.  However, Dane County may disqualify an applicant if the position’s responsibilities are substantially related to the applicant’s criminal history (e.g., the nature of the crime and its relationship to the position, whether hiring, transferring or promoting an applicant would pose an unreasonable risk to the business, its employees, customers and vendors, etc.) Management reserves the right to make employment contingent upon successful completion of the background check.

For Bilingual Positions
  1.     Provide services in both English and the required foreign language (e.g., Spanish, Arabic, Hmong, etc.). 
  2. Applicants being considered for bilingual positions will be tested during the recruitment process prior to employment. This will primarily consist of passing an oral language proficiency assessment from English to foreign language and foreign language to English, but may require additional language testing, such as written translation, if it is an essential function of the job. 
*If applicable, individuals may confirm with the Employee Relations Division whether results of bilingual language certifications/ examinations they currently hold qualify them for the position’s bilingual designation.

Physical and Environmental Work Requirements:
Professional office work environment. Work involves walking, sitting, standing, bending, stooping, twisting, turning, lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, grasping, and reaching within normal ranges. Ability to lift and move a variety of work-related materials weighing up to 25 pounds (without assistance). Prolonged computer and phone use. Manual dexterity using fine and gross motor skills. Ability to speak and be heard by others. Ability to see and hear within normal ranges with or without corrective devices.

Knowledge of criminal justice system and the Wisconsin State Statutes pertaining to DOC 350. Ability to assess and interpret a variety of complex information and exercise independent judgment. Ability to skillfully plan, organize, and assure follow through with minimal supervision.  Ability to problem-solve and accomplish goals in a team environment. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Ability to successfully multi-task. Ability to read and understand complex guidelines, regulations and policies. Ability to collect data and maintain database records. Ability to operate standard office equipment.
