The Dane County Land and Water Resources Department is recruiting for Limited Term Employee (LTE) Career Pathways Intern (Land and Water Resources Department Conservation) positions.

Limited Term Employees (LTEs) are limited to 1,200 hours in a payroll year and are not guaranteed any hours per week.

Note to applicants – for the 2026 budget year, there is a 1% reduction in wages. This is reflected in the above hourly wage.

DEFINITION

This unique opportunity is designed to give emerging adults practical job skills that can be used immediately, a big-picture awareness of Dane County government jobs, and an understanding of the potential career pathways to Dane County employment. Positions are available in several different Dane County departments. Individuals are placed in and supervised by one (1) department for the entire duration of their internship.


EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

Attend an orientation and meet regularly with a cohort LTE Conservation Career Pathways Interns. Assist in various conservation practices and gain exposure to a wide variety of equipment used in natural resource careers. Job shadow on conservation, park, or construction site visits. Learn and assist with conservation practice documentation, GIS/data tasks and perform administrative tasks including research and developing outreach materials. Physical tasks such as organizing project materials, setting up for events and keeping program areas clean. Work a regular weekly schedule, learn about career pathways and participate in a season-end celebration.

Education, Training and Experience:

Must be 18-24 years old. 


Special Requirements:

Must have a valid driver’s license, or access to reliable personal transportation, or equivalent. Also refer to the “Physical and Environmental Work Requirements” section below.


Background Check Statement: Some positions may require a criminal background check which can include fingerprinting due to the nature of the job's responsibilities. Wisconsin's Fair Employment Law, s. 111.31 – 111.395, Wis. Stats., prohibits discrimination because of an arrest or conviction record. However, Dane County may disqualify an applicant if the position's responsibilities are substantially related to the applicant's criminal history (e.g., the nature of the crime and its relationship to the position, whether hiring, transferring or promoting an applicant would pose an unreasonable risk to the business, its employees, customers and vendors, etc.) Management reserves the right to make employment contingent upon successful completion of the background check.


For Bilingual Positions:

  1. Provide services in both English and the required foreign language (e.g., Spanish, Arabic, Hmong, etc.).
  2. Applicants being considered for bilingual positions will be tested during the recruitment process prior to employment. This will primarily consist of passing an oral language proficiency assessment from English to foreign language and foreign language to English, but may require additional language testing, such as written translation, if it is an essential function of the job.

*If applicable, individuals may confirm with the Employee Relations Division whether results of bilingual language certifications/examinations they currently hold qualify them for the position’s bilingual designation.


Physical and Environmental Work Requirements:

Work involves walking, sitting, standing, bending, twisting, lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, and reaching within normal ranges. Ability to lift and move a variety of work-related materials weighing up to 25 pounds. May be required to work outdoors in all weather conditions. Computer and phone use. Ability to speak and be heard by others. Ability to see and hear within normal ranges with or without corrective devices.Ability to organize work, ideas and/or activities. Ability to work productively with indirect supervision in an in-person environment. Ability to communicate ideas effectively in speaking and writing. Ability to learn, ask questions, and engage with diverse communities.
