Located at The Academy for International Studies (AIS)
Summer Session runs from July 6, 2026 - August 6, 2026 (Monday through Thursday for 5 weeks) 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. daily
Special Education Paraeducators provide meaningful student support for those students with special needs participating in our Summer School Program. Working in both the indoor classroom, cafeteria and outdoor playground settings, Paraeducators are responsible for assisting individual students or small groups of students in both play and instructional programming across the school day. Paraeducators work under the direct supervision of a certified staff member in each instance, implementing the teacher's plans for instruction and providing such support as directed. Activities can include assisting students with basic skills in math or reading, playing games, reading books, assisting with meals, and supervising on the playground. Working as a Summer School Paraeducator is an excellent way to learn more about our programs that specifically serve students with identified special needs.

Responsibilities
- Working at the daily direction of the certified staff member, Paraeducators provide hands on assistance, supervision, and support on basic academic and social skills being reinforced in the summer classroom for identified students with special needs.
- May be assigned to work with individual students or small groups of students, all with varying identified special needs.
- Assist the teacher in the handling, operation and care of equipment used in the classroom, including media and instructional materials.
- Assist the teacher with non-instructional duties, such as snack, toilet and clothing routines.
- Help students master instructional materials assigned by teacher.
- Assist in providing a well-organized, smoothly functioning school environment.
- Assist the teacher in supervising students on arrival to or departure from school and all transitional times.
- Assist in monitoring students during eating periods.
- Assist in hall and stairway supervision.
- Escort students to other rooms/locations as required.
- Maintain the same high level of ethical behavior and sensitivity of information about students as is expected of a certified teacher or assistant teacher.
- Assist in other related duties that may be assigned by the teacher.
- High School diploma or equivalent is required of all applicants
- Must possess or be willing to acquire the skills necessary to support students with a variety of special needs.
- Internal candidates currently working as Paraeducators in the Danbury Public Schools and those candidates considering future careers in a school setting preferred.
- Experience/training in working with children preferred.
- Evidence of the ability to work cooperatively with other staff members required.
- This position includes some physical requirements, including moderate lifting, pulling, stretching, bending, in order to maintain safety for all students and staff in the program.
