Operating Room Instrument Technician
POSITION SUMMARY:
The Operating Room Instrument Technician is responsible for the decontamination, inspection, assembly, sterilization, and distribution of surgical instruments and equipment in accordance with hospital policies and regulatory standards. The technician supports the surgical team by ensuring all instrumentation is prepared, complete, and available for surgical procedures.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
· Decontaminates, cleans, inspects, assembles, packages, and sterilizes surgical instruments and trays.
· Checks instrumentation for functionality and completeness prior to use.
· Prepares case carts with instruments, supplies, and equipment for scheduled surgical procedures.
· Assists in room turnover and setup as needed under the direction of the circulating nurse or surgical team.
· Maintains sterility and ensures proper handling of sterile items.
· Operates and maintains autoclaves, ultrasonic cleaners, and other processing equipment.
· Maintains accurate logs and documentation for sterilization and equipment use.
· Communicates with OR staff regarding instrument issues or urgent needs.
· Follows infection control and safety standards in handling equipment and biohazard materials.
· Participates in inventory control and restocking of supplies and instrumentation.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education & Experience:
· High School Diploma or GED required.
· Completion of a Sterile Processing or Surgical Technology program preferred.
· Minimum 1 year of experience in instrument processing or OR support in an acute care hospital preferred.
Licenses/Certifications:
· Certification as a Central Service Technician (CRCST) or Surgical Technologist (CST) preferred or required per state regulation.
· BLS certification from American Heart Association required.
