The Engineering Intern is responsible for performing a variety of tasks in construction staking, materials testing, and inspection for road construction projects. This position works for the Construction unit within the Dakota County Transportation Department.

This Engineering Intern position is a great opportunity for students to explore their interest and gain work experience in the Engineering, Construction, and/or Survey fields. We will be hiring 2 to 3 interns this summer in our construction unit. The positions will last approximately 3-4 month and may require the ability to work a flexible schedule which include early morning or evening hours to accommodate project deadlines.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent (G.E.D.)

AND

  • Enrollment in a college or technical school in a civil engineering/technician, construction, engineering, surveying program, or a closely related degree.

AND

  • Valid driver's license

Preferred, But Not Required, Education Beyond Minimum Qualifications

  • Completed coursework within a civil engineering/technician, construction management, or surveying program.
  • Previous transportation construction engineering experience.
  • Previous land surveying experience.

Duties & Responsibilities

These examples do not include all possible tasks in this work and do not limit the assignment of related tasks in any position of this classification. Regular attendance according to the position's management approved work schedule is required for all positions.

  • Assist Transportation Construction staff with inspections of projects including roads, bridges, and trails.
  • Assist with use of survey equipment, total station, GPS system and data collectors to complete work.
  • Assist construction and survey crew members as apparent or assigned.
  • Safely work on construction sites and within roadways to accomplish work.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: Duties 1 - 4 are essential functions as well as regular attendance according to the position's management approved work schedule.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities And Work Environment

  • Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing.
  • Ability to do or learn basic staking, surveying or material testing.
  • Ability to complete mathematical calculations.
  • Must be reliable with consistent performance and attendance.
  • Ability to, or learn to, interpret roadway maps or construction plans.
  • Ability and skill to use hand tools and operate small to heavy size equipment.
  • Working knowledge of word processing, and spreadsheet and database computer software programs (e.g., Microsoft Office--Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access).

WORK ENVIRONMENT: 5% inside during the winter months, 95% outside from early spring till early winter. Must be able to perform the following on an occasional to continuous basis; sitting, standing, walking, balancing, bending/stooping, turning/twisting, low-level position, reaching forward/overhead/low levels, firm/simple grasping, and continuous bending/twisting of the arms. Positions requires force/lifting 0 to 24 pounds on a constant basis, 25 to 34 pounds of force occasional, 35 to 50 pounds rare to occasional, anything above 50 pounds is rare and should be done as a team lift. Exposures may include, but are not limited to; changing weather conditions, uneven/rough/sloped walking conditions, roadway traffic and construction equipment on roads or constructions projects, dust, dirt, paint, solvents, cleaners, exhaust and noise. Driving is required for this position and staff must have the ability to use a variety of powered equipment including but not limited to: light and heavy equipment including hammer/maul, machete, hammer drills, chisels, pavement grinder, post-hole digger, survey/GPS equipment, generator, compressor, personal computer, printers, telephone, cellular phone, calculator, copy machine, video equipment, and personal safety equipment. Temporary staff are NOT required to operate heavy or powered equipment.
