The Engineering Intern is responsible for performing a variety of tasks in construction staking, materials testing, and inspection for road construction projects. This position works for the Construction unit within the Dakota County Transportation Department.
This Engineering Intern position is a great opportunity for students to explore their interest and gain work experience in the Engineering, Construction, and/or Survey fields. We will be hiring 2 to 3 interns this summer in our construction unit. The positions will last approximately 3-4 month and may require the ability to work a flexible schedule which include early morning or evening hours to accommodate project deadlines.

Minimum Qualifications
- High School Diploma or equivalent (G.E.D.)
- Enrollment in a college or technical school in a civil engineering/technician, construction, engineering, surveying program, or a closely related degree.
- Valid driver's license
- Completed coursework within a civil engineering/technician, construction management, or surveying program.
- Previous transportation construction engineering experience.
- Previous land surveying experience.

- Assist Transportation Construction staff with inspections of projects including roads, bridges, and trails.
- Assist with use of survey equipment, total station, GPS system and data collectors to complete work.
- Assist construction and survey crew members as apparent or assigned.
- Safely work on construction sites and within roadways to accomplish work.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities And Work Environment
- Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing.
- Ability to do or learn basic staking, surveying or material testing.
- Ability to complete mathematical calculations.
- Must be reliable with consistent performance and attendance.
- Ability to, or learn to, interpret roadway maps or construction plans.
- Ability and skill to use hand tools and operate small to heavy size equipment.
- Working knowledge of word processing, and spreadsheet and database computer software programs (e.g., Microsoft Office--Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access).
