PURPOSE
The purpose of the Staff Attorney is to assist the Director of Government Affairs and Legal Services in conducting legal research; reviewing, drafting and negotiating legal documents; and providing legal opinions and recommendations to Dairyland leadership.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Act in supporting and advisory capacity to Director of Legal Services and Dairyland staff on legal consequences or risks as they relate to Dairyland business, compliance and regulatory activities.
  • Draft and review contracts and other legal documents, negotiate modifications as necessary, and coordinates with Director of Legal Services to finalize as appropriate
  • Review state and federal statutes and regulatory dockets; prepare and file comments, petitions, applications, interventions, and other documents, as needed, with appropriate governmental agencies.
  • Draft legal letters and other legal communications documents.
  • Conduct a wide array of legal research and provide legal opinions and recommendations to Dairyland staff. Provide training to Dairyland staff on substantive legal topics, agreements and programs, as needed.
  • Assist Director of Legal Services in developing and growing internal legal services’ portfolio.
  • Work closely with outside counsel as approved by Director of Legal Services and review and confirm associated billing statements as received.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education & Experience

  • Juris Doctorate Degree from accredited law school. Must be in good standing with a U.S. state bar and willing and qualified to seek admission to the bar in Wisconsin at the earliest opportunity required. Minimum of three (3) years of active legal practice in the area(s) of electric/public utilities, energy, regulatory compliance, corporate, or real estate law. Experience in the state of Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa or Washington D.C. preferred.

Knowledge and Skills
  • Direct experience in one or more of the following areas and working knowledge of the other areas: Electric/public utilities, energy law, commercial transactions/commercial law, real
  • property law/real estate transactions, environmental permitting/environmental law, and general business and corporate law.
  • Strong contract drafting and negotiating skills, paying close attention to details.
  • Possess strong critical thinking, interpretation, problem-solving, and analytical skills. Must be capable of reading, analyzing and interpreting complex documents, and responding effectively. Must be capable of accurately assessing needs and guiding others in determining and developing strategies.
  • Superior communications skills with the ability to interface effectively with individuals at all levels, both internally and externally.
  • Strong listening, reasoning, influencing and facilitating skills.
  • Ability to uphold the highest standards of discretion and confidentiality and adhere to the Wisconsin Rules of Professional Conduct.
