Job Description: Dryer Operator – Spray Dryer (WPC 80%)
Position Summary
The Dryer Operator is responsible for the safe, efficient, and consistent operation of the spray dryer used in the production of Whey Protein Concentrate 80% (WPC 80). This role ensures product quality, monitors system performance, troubleshoots issues, and maintains sanitation and safety standards throughout the drying process. The operator works independently and is expected to maintain accurate documentation and communicate effectively with the whey processing and maintenance teams.
Key Responsibilities: Dryer Operation & Process Control
- Operate, monitor, and adjust spray dryer equipment, evaporators, fluid beds, cyclones, and associated systems to ensure optimal drying of WPC 80.
- Maintain target moisture, particle size, bulk density, and powder quality specifications.
- Start up, shut down, and transition equipment following established SOPs.
- Perform in-process sampling and quality checks; communicate deviations immediately.
- Monitor control panels, instrumentation, and alarms; take corrective action as needed.
Sanitation & Safety
- Perform regular cleaning of dryer equipment, baghouses, ducts, and fluid beds following sanitation schedules.
- Conduct CIP (Clean-In-Place) operations where required and document all cleaning.
- Ensure compliance with all plant safety, PPE, and housekeeping standards.
- Maintain a safe work environment by identifying hazards and reporting unsafe conditions.
Quality & Documentation
- Record detailed operational data including temperatures, flows, pressures, product quality, and downtime.
- Follow all GMP, HACCP, and food safety protocols.
- Complete batch records, logs, and shift reports accurately and on time.
- Work with Quality Assurance to resolve product or process variances.
Maintenance & Troubleshooting
- Identify and diagnose mechanical, electrical, or process issues in the dryer system.
- Perform basic routine maintenance and support maintenance personnel on repairs.
- Communicate equipment failures, parts needs, and operational concerns promptly.
Teamwork & Communication
- Communicate clearly during shift handoffs to ensure continuity of operations.
- Collaborate with whey processing, packaging, and quality teams to maintain efficient product flow.
- Support training of new operators as needed.
Qualifications – Required
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Experience in food, dairy, or manufacturing operations.
- Mechanical aptitude and ability to learn automated process controls.
- Ability to work independently during night shift hours.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to safety and quality.
Qualifications – Preferred
- Previous spray dryer or whey processing experience.
- Experience with WPC, MPC, lactose, or similar drying operations.
- Familiarity with CIP systems and food safety standards (GMP, HACCP).
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand, walk, and climb stairs for extended periods.
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs as needed.
- Work in warm, high-noise, and fast-paced production environments.
- Reach, bend, push, and pull during sanitation and maintenance activities.
Pay: $22.00 - $28.00 per hour
Expected hours: 40.0 per week
