Position Overview
The Dade County Sentinel is looking for a news reporter/journalist/news section editor. The ideal candidate is a writer and editor with a curious mind, creative bent, excellent interpersonal skills, nose for news, and interest in our small town and surrounding areas.
Responsibilities
The primary responsibilities include:
- Identifying newsworthy stories by attending local government meetings, conversing with residents, and staying informed on local events, businesses, and issues
- Interviewing all relevant parties, collecting quotes, facts, and data
- Collecting and taking photographs
- Drafting and proofreading news stories
- Posting articles on website and Facebook
- Building and maintaining connections with PR representatives, PIOs, citizens, and newspaper contributors
Qualifications
The successful candidate should possess the following qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in English, journalism, communications, political science, history, or a related field
- Excellent proofreading skills, careful attention to detail
- Excellent interpersonal, communication, and interview skills
- Ability to manage multiple tasks and stories at once
- Simple website editing experience preferred (particularly WordPress)
Location/Hours
This is a full-time position (with some flexible hours) based in our office in Trenton, GA. Must be able to attend regular evening meetings, occasional weekend events, and occasionally conduct interviews after hours.
Must be able to attend government meetings around town, conduct on-site interviews at places of business, farms, homes, etc., and take photographs on location.
The news reporter collaborates closely with our layout manager and also works with our office manager and sports editor.
