What are the responsibilities and job description for the Irrigation Technician position at Dabney Collins?
Key Responsibilities
- Install new irrigation systems and retrofit/update existing systems per design plans and manufacturer specifications
- Conduct system start-up, pressure testing, and flow calculations (GPM, PSI) to ensure correct operation
- Verify coverage and perform zone-by-zone checks to confirm even distribution and efficient water use
- Program and adjust controllers (timers, seasonal adjust, rain/freeze sensors) and ensure proper scheduling for different zones and plant types
- Perform backflow prevention assembly testing and basic maintenance; coordinate with licensed professionals as needed
- Inspect, clean, and replace irrigation components (valves, solenoids, heads, filters, filters, check valves, drip emitters)
- Diagnose and repair issues: leaks, misaligned heads, low pressure, clogged emitters, faulty wiring, valve malfunctions, zone failures
- Measure and document soil moisture considerations and adjustments to efficiency; recommend improvements
- Create and maintain accurate job notes, system diagrams, and as-built drawings
- Provide clear, courteous customer communication: explain issues, recommended solutions, and maintenance plans
Qualifications and Skills
- Proven experience installing and servicing residential and/or commercial irrigation systems
- Strong knowledge of irrigation hydraulics: pressure, flow, head-to-head coverage, piping layout, emitter/ sprinkler sizing
- Ability to perform pressure tests, flow tests, and characterize zones for even coverage
- Proficiency with controllers, scheduling, programming, and sensor integration
- Experience with backflow prevention and ASSE 50001/5010 or equivalent testing concepts (local requirements)
- Familiarity with drip irrigation systems and emitters, zones, valves, filters
- Ability to read and interpret irrigation design plans and as-built drawings
- Basic electrical understanding for wiring valves, controllers, and troubleshooting circuits
- Excellent diagnostic and problem-solving skills
- Strong customer service and communication abilities
- Valid driver’s license; clean driving record
- Ability to lift, bend, climb ladders, and perform physically demanding tasks
