D. H. Griffin Infrastructure has an immediate opening for a General Superintendent.
D.H. Griffin Infrastructure is the Heavy Civil Construction component of the D.H. Griffin Companies. DHGI has built on top of decades of success in the wrecking and demolition industries to become one of the premier Heavy Civil contractors in North Carolina.
The General Superintendent is responsible for the timely, safe, and quality-driven completion of civil infrastructure projects, including mass grading, underground utilities, and sitework. Responsibilities include:
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Schedule and coordinate all subcontractors, vendors, and suppliers along the critical path.
• Perform daily field inspections to monitor quality, compliance, and safety.
• Track ASIs, RFIs, submittals, and changes; communicate with project team for approvals and clarifications.
• Ensure subcontractors comply with all safety, quality, and schedule requirements.
• Coordinate inspections with local jurisdictions and regulatory authorities.
• Maintain accurate daily logs and project records.
• Conduct site walks and progress monitoring to anticipate schedule impacts.
• Preside over weekly subcontractor coordination meetings.
• Issue notices of non-compliance and track corrective actions.
• Maintain organized, safe, and clean jobsite conditions.
• Oversee punch list completion and final project closeout.
• Scheduling and coordinating subcontractors, consultants, and vendors to meet project milestones.
• Ensuring all work is performed in accordance with approved plans, specifications, and local, state, and federal codes.
• Managing conflicts, unforeseen conditions, or plan revisions by communicating with the project team (Director of Operations, project manager, engineer, architect, owner) for resolution prior to execution.
• Establishing and enforcing field quality control programs, ensuring construction meets engineering and design standards.
• Maintaining strict adherence to project budgetary controls; does not have authority for monetary commitments. All change orders or subcontract agreements must be routed to the Director of Operations.
• Performance deficiencies may result in reprimand or termination.
SECONDARY FUNCTIONS:
• Support budgeting, bid reviews, and subcontract awards.
• Assist with permitting, approvals, and revision coordination.
• Maintain submittal documentation and approvals at the jobsite.
• Support pre-construction planning and subcontractor onboarding.
• Secure and open/close the jobsite daily.
• Assist in hiring or onboarding assistant superintendents or field staff.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Supervise 150 personnel, including subcontractors, consultants, and vendors.
• Ensure adequate manpower allocation and adherence to project schedules.
• Oversee security personnel and all assistant superintendents.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
• Lead and resolve conflicts among multiple subcontractors and vendors.
• Identify deficient work and enforce corrective actions.
• Proficient in blueprint reading and civil/sitework drawings.
• Ability to navigate large construction sites, including grading areas, trenches, and elevated structures.
• Strong oral and written communication skills; ability to present to project teams and owners.
• Teamwork-oriented with ability to mentor assistant superintendents and field staff.
• Strong planning, organizational, and prioritization skills.
• Commitment to safety, quality, and professional conduct under all conditions.
• Adaptable to changing project conditions and competing priorities.
QUALIFICATIONS:
• Minimum 10 years of experience as a Superintendent in civil infrastructure or heavy construction with verifiable experience in grading, underground utilities, sitework, and/or road construction.
• Thorough knowledge of trades, construction methods, and civil engineering practices.
• Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, project management software (Procore, Buildertrend, or similar), and digital construction tools.
• Ability to read and interpret construction plans, specifications, and civil drawings.
• Ability to work across multiple sites simultaneously.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
• Minimum of 10 years in heavy civil, sitework, or infrastructure construction.
• Experience with mass grading, underground utilities, roadways, and commercial/industrial site development.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Project, Outlook) and construction management software.
• Ability to read and interpret civil engineering plans, safety manuals, and operational procedures.
