The D. E. Shaw group seeks a highly analytical and execution-oriented associate to join Cove, its private equity strategy focused on building and scaling consolidation platforms. As a core member of the team, you’ll play a central role in evaluating acquisition opportunities, executing transactions, and supporting portfolio company growth across Cove’s platforms. This position offers the opportunity to help build a fast-growing strategy at the intersection of private equity investing, operational transformation, and technology-enabled platform development. What you’ll do day-to-day
You’ll evaluate investment opportunities by conducting financial modeling, market research, and industry analysis to assess potential acquisition targets within Cove’s focus sectors. You’ll support all phases of deal execution, including diligence, valuation, structuring, and closing, and will develop and maintain detailed operating and LBO models to inform investment decisions. You’ll coordinate diligence workstreams with advisors and internal stakeholders, and work closely with management teams and Cove operators to track performance, evaluate growth initiatives, and support integration of acquisitions. Additionally, you’ll monitor industry landscapes to identify trends and consolidation opportunities, and contribute to the development of platform strategies and operational improvement initiatives.
Who we’re looking for
One to three years of experience in investment banking, strategy consulting, private equity, or a similarly rigorous analytical role is required.
Strong financial modeling and valuation skills, with experience building LBO and operating models, primarily in Excel.
Demonstrated ability to analyze businesses and industries, synthesize complex information, and form clear investment perspectives.
Interest in platform-building strategies and an understanding of consolidation dynamics in fragmented markets.
Excellent communication and presentation skills, strong work ethic, and keen attention to detail, with the ability to manage multiple projects in a fast-paced environment.
A collaborative mindset and the ability to work effectively with investment professionals, operators, and portfolio company leadership.
An undergraduate degree with strong academic performance is required; coursework in finance, economics, engineering, or related quantitative fields is preferred.
Experience with Python or similar programming languages is a decided advantage.
The expected annual base salary for this position is $150,000 to $200,000. Our compensation and benefits package includes variable compensation in the form of a year-end bonus, guaranteed in the first year of hire, and benefits including medical and prescription drug coverage, 401(k) contribution matching, wellness reimbursement, family building benefits, and a charitable gift match program.
