Reporting directly to the CFO, the Controller will oversee all accounting operations across eCommerce, wholesale, and potential future retail channels. This individual will lead the financial close process, strengthen internal controls, implement systems, and partner cross-functionally with Operations, Production, Marketing, and Leadership.
This person will transform the company’s financial function from “startup scrappy” to “scalable and world-class,” ensuring accuracy, compliance, and a data-driven foundation for long-term growth. The role will also require periodic travel to Ohio.
- Lead the monthly, quarterly, and annual close process with accuracy and timeliness.
- Prepare GAAP-compliant financial statements, including P&L, balance sheet, cash flow, and consolidated reporting as international operations expand.
- Own all general ledger activities—journal entries, reconciliations, accruals, and variance analysis.
- Oversee revenue recognition for both eCommerce (Shopify) and B2B/wholesale channels.
- Maintain and strengthen accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls.
- Manage AP/AR, collections, vendor payments, and cash management.
- Oversee payroll, employee compensation accounting, and related benefits reporting.
- Ensure compliance with sales tax, income tax, regulatory filings, and annual audits.
- Partner with Operations to ensure accurate COGS, landed cost, and inventory valuation across warehouses, 3PLs, and retail partners.
- Reconcile inventory across Shopify, ERP, and warehouse systems; monitor shrinkage and cost fluctuations.
- Collaborate with FP&A on budgeting, forecasting, cash flow modeling, and KPI reporting.
- Provide actionable financial insights to support pricing, margin optimization, buying decisions, and product strategy.
- Support systems and process automation to reduce manual work and increase visibility across the business.
- Advise leadership on financial best practices, new business initiatives, global expansion, and potential wholesale/retail growth.
- Lead ERP implementation and optimization (QuickBooks preferred); ensure seamless integrations with Shopify, 3PLs, and marketplace platforms.
- Improve reporting tools, BI dashboards, and financial workflows to support scale.
- Drive automation and operational efficiency across accounting and finance.
- Build, mentor, and lead a high-performing accounting team as the company grows.
- Foster a culture of accuracy, accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
- Serve as a trusted partner to cross-functional leaders throughout the organization.
- 7–15 years of progressive accounting experience; experience in fashion, apparel, eCommerce, retail, or consumer goods required.
- Prior Controller or Assistant Controller experience at a high-growth brand, or senior public accounting experience.
- Deep understanding of GAAP, inventory accounting, and omni-channel revenue recognition.
- Experience managing global or multi-entity operations preferred.
- Hands-on experience with QuickBooks, Shopify, and inventory/ERP systems.
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
- CPA strongly preferred; Big 4/public accounting experience a major plus.
- Strong Excel skills; familiarity with BI tools (Looker, Snowflake, Tableau) is a plus.
- Demonstrated ability to improve processes, implement systems, and scale financial operations.
