Avionics Hardware Design Engineer

Own circuit card assembly design for airborne communication, navigation and surveillance products, covering both the RF and the digital content of the board. The engineer carries a design from requirements through schematic, layout, qualification and integration, and supports the product once it is fielded.

Key responsibilities

• Run the circuit card design lifecycle: requirements capture, schematic capture, design documentation, signal integrity analysis, board stackup and routing instructions, and coordination and review of printed wiring board layout.
• Design and analyze analog and RF circuits using schematic capture and performance simulation tools.
• Design digital circuits including processors, memory, FPGA devices and industry interfaces such as Ethernet, I2C, SPI and UART, and assess throughput, timing and capacity.
• Characterize analog and RF signals on the bench using oscilloscopes, network analyzers, spectrum analyzers and signal generators.
• Create and execute test plans, perform root cause analysis on defects, and support product integration.
• Manage parts obsolescence on assigned products and drive resolution.
• Work across a multi discipline team of systems, software, mechanical and test engineers.

Required qualifications

• Schematic capture and printed circuit board layout using Siemens Xpedition, Altium, Cadence Allegro or an equivalent ECAD tool.
• Demonstrated analog, digital or RF circuit design at board level, with hands on troubleshooting.
• Bench instrumentation fluency across oscilloscope, digital multimeter, network analyzer, spectrum analyzer and power meter.
• Signal integrity analysis and board stackup definition.
• STEM degree. Mid level positions require 2 or more years of relevant experience, senior positions 5 or more years, and principal positions 8 or more years.
• U.S. Person status and willingness to work onsite in Melbourne, Florida or Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Preferred qualifications

• RTCA DO-160 environmental qualification and RTCA DO-254 design assurance for airborne electronic hardware.
• RF and microwave design, including transmitter and power amplifier, and receiver and low noise amplifier design.
• Familiarity with avionics product lines such as DME, VOR and localizer, ILS, marker beacon, GNSS, ADF and radar altimeter.
• SPICE simulation using LTSPICE, PSPICE, TINA or equivalent.
• Design for test, design for manufacture, and yield and margin analysis.
• FAA Technical Standard Order process, MIL-STD-461, and lightning and electromagnetic qualification.
• FPGA design and verification for candidates targeting the digital positions.

Pay: $90,000.00 - $110,000.00 per year
