Senior Composite Specialist
Position Overview
The Senior Composite Specialist will develop and deliver advanced technical training and documentation for composite manufacturing teams, with a focus on carbon fiber and fiberglass processes. This role ensures consistent, compliant execution of composite lamination, resin systems and RTM techniques across production, supports first article inspection (FAI) activities, drives continuous improvement (CI), and leads root cause analysis (RCA) efforts. The trainer acts as a subject matter expert for mold preparation, process documentation and aerospace quality standards, and collaborates with engineering, quality and production to strengthen workforce capabilities and maintain regulatory readiness.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, develop and deliver classroom and hands-on training programs covering carbon fiber, fiberglass, composite lamination, resin handling and RTM processes.
- Create, maintain and control technical documentation, work instructions, standard operating procedures (SOPs) and training materials to ensure repeatable, compliant manufacturing practices.
- Lead and support First Article Inspection (FAI) activities by training teams on acceptance criteria, documentation requirements and corrective actions.
- Provide expert guidance on mold preparation, lay-up techniques, tooling care and composite curing processes to optimize part quality and reduce rework.
- Coach and mentor production and engineering staff on best practices for resin systems, infusion techniques and process parameter control.
- Perform and facilitate root cause analysis (RCA) for composite defects and non-conformances, and drive corrective actions through continuous improvement (CI) initiatives.
- Develop competency assessments, maintain training records, and report on training effectiveness and workforce readiness metrics.
- Partner with quality and regulatory teams to support aerospace certification requirements and audit readiness, including preparation for NADCAP and ACMA evaluations where applicable.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to implement process improvements, troubleshoot production issues and validate corrective actions.
- Serve as a subject matter expert for on-the-job training, mentoring apprentices and upskilling technicians to meet evolving production needs.
Qualifications
- Demonstrated expertise with carbon fiber and fiberglass materials, composite lamination techniques, resin systems and RTM processes.
- Proven experience preparing tooling and molds, including mold preparation, release systems and cure cycle management.
- Hands-on experience supporting or leading First Article Inspection (FAI) and familiarity with aerospace acceptance criteria and documentation.
- Strong skills in documentation development and control for SOPs, work instructions and training materials.
- Experience conducting root cause analysis (RCA) and leading continuous improvement (CI) projects to reduce defects and improve yield.
- Prior experience delivering technical training and building competency programs for manufacturing teams; excellent communication and coaching skills.
- Practical knowledge of aerospace manufacturing standards and quality systems; experience working in an aerospace environment is required.
- Proficiency with common productivity and documentation tools (e.g., MS Office, training/LMS platforms) and ability to maintain accurate training records.
- Ability to travel to production sites and perform hands-on coaching as needed; comfortable working in a manufacturing environment.
- Nice-to-have: experience with ACMA and NADCAP processes, audit support and accreditation preparation.
