Position Overview
We are seeking a skilled General Liability Attorney to join our insurance defense team. The successful candidate will manage a varied caseload of general liability matters, including personal injury, premises liability, and professional liability claims. The role requires strong litigation experience, client-focused advocacy for insurance carriers, and the ability to handle matters from intake through trial or resolution while coordinating with claims professionals and experts.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage a caseload of general liability and related matters from intake through resolution, including case assessment, strategy development, and file maintenance.
- Draft and respond to pleadings, motions, discovery requests, and other litigation documents; prepare memoranda and legal research to support case strategy.
- Conduct depositions, take and defend witness testimony, prepare witnesses and experts, and handle pretrial and trial proceedings as necessary.
- Negotiate settlements and participate in mediations and alternative dispute resolution on behalf of insureds and carriers.
- Work closely with claims adjusters, insureds, and outside experts to develop defense strategies, evaluate exposure, and control litigation costs.
- Coordinate expert retention and manage expert reports, exhibits, and demonstrative evidence.
- Maintain accurate time and billing records in accordance with firm and client requirements; meet productivity and profitability goals.
- Provide clear, timely client communication and case status updates; advise clients on legal risk, potential outcomes, and recommended courses of action.
- Supervise and mentor junior attorneys, paralegals, and support staff; review work product and delegate tasks to ensure quality and efficiency.
- Stay current on changes in tort law, insurance regulations, and industry best practices; participate in CLE and professional development.
Qualifications
- Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school and active membership in the state bar.
- 3 years of litigation experience with a significant focus on general liability and insurance defense; medical malpractice and professional liability experience strongly preferred.
- Demonstrated courtroom experience, including depositions, motion practice, and trial preparation; trial experience a plus.
- Strong legal research, writing, and analytical skills, with the ability to produce persuasive pleadings and briefs.
- Proven ability to manage a high-volume caseload, meet deadlines, and maintain organized files.
- Excellent negotiation and settlement skills and experience working with mediators and alternative dispute resolution forums.
- Professionalism and strong client service orientation; ability to build and maintain relationships with insurance carriers and claims professionals.
- Comfortable supervising junior staff and collaborating in a team-oriented environment.
- Proficiency with case management software, docketing systems, and Microsoft Office; experience with electronic discovery tools preferred.
- Willingness to travel for court appearances, hearings, and mediations as required.
