Mainframe Developer

We are seeking an experienced Mainframe Developer to lead and support complex application development initiatives. This role involves the full software development lifecycle including architecture design, analysis, programming, testing, implementation, and ongoing support for mission-critical applications running in a mainframe environment.

Title: Senior Application Programmer – Mainframe Systems

Location: Onsite in Downey, CA (M–F, 8:30 AM–4:00 PM)

Type: Long-term contract (12–24 months)

Industry: Government / Public Sector

Key Responsibilities

• Design, develop, enhance, and maintain mainframe applications and system components.
• Analyze business requirements and translate them into technical specifications and application prototypes.
• Write, test, debug, and optimize COBOL and DB2/IMS programs in a z/OS environment.
• Develop JCL and utilities for batch processes and production support.
• Work with users and cross-functional teams to support testing, implementation, and troubleshooting.
• Ensure application quality, system reliability, maintainability, and adherence to security standards.
• Prepare technical documentation and participate in architectural planning.

Required Skills & Experience

• Minimum 7 years of hands-on mainframe development experience.
• Strong proficiency with:
• COBOL
• DB2/SQL
• IMS (DB/DC)
• CICS
• JCL, TSO/ISPF, VSAM
• Experience with batch processing, performance tuning, and large-scale enterprise systems.
• Excellent problem-solving, communication, and analytical skills.

Preferred Skills

• IMS/DB2/COBOL/CICS experience in a large production mainframe environment.
• Familiarity with additional tools such as SPUFI, File Manager, ICETOOLS, IBM OPTIM, CA Endevor, CA Spool, and IBM Debugger.
• Experience working in a government, public sector, or regulated environment.

Education

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field (Equivalent experience may be accepted in place of a degree.)
