Job Title: 3D Scanning Technician (June-September 2026)
FLSA: Non-Exempt, Hourly (Temporary/Seasonal - up to 40 hours per week)
Ever wanted to get paid to travel the state of Montana for a summer? Now's your chance! The 3D Scanning Technician is responsible for capturing accurate field data of existing buildings and sites using 3D scanning equipment. This seasonal position requires extensive travel throughout the state of Montana and independent work in a variety of environments, including remote or unfamiliar locations. The technician will support project teams by delivering high-quality scan data for use in design, documentation, and modeling efforts.
Essential Functions/Major Duties and Responsibilities: (The individual must be able to perform the essential functions of the job. A. Travel to project sites across Montana to perform 3D scanning of buildings and spaces.
B. Operate and maintain 3D scanning equipment (e.g., LiDAR scanners, cameras, tripods, and related tools).
C. Set up scanning equipment, establish scan positions, and ensure complete and accurate coverage of the inside and outside of the building, including the building roof.
D. Work independently in a variety of environments, including unoccupied or occupied buildings, and unfamiliar locations.
E. Follow safety protocols and maintain situational awareness while working alone in the field.
F. Upload and manage scan data to the Matterport cloud platform for processing.
G. Perform basic field quality checks to ensure scans are complete, properly aligned, and usable by project teams.
H. Ensure all interior and exterior details and angles of the building are covered by the scan. This includes, but is not limited to:
- Electrical fixtures (lights, plugs, electrical panels, etc.)
- Plumbing fixtures
- HVAC fixtures, such as exhaust, vents, etc.
- Mechanical equipment located on the roof
I. Coordinate with project managers regarding site access, scheduling, and scope of work.
J. Maintain clear documentation of field activities, including notes, photos, and scan logs.
K. Assist with basic navigation, labeling, and organization of Matterport models as needed.
Other Duties as Assigned: Perform other duties as assigned. This may include assisting with data organization, equipment upkeep, or supporting additional field documentation efforts.
Supervision:
• Reports to Principals/Project Managers
• Does not supervise others
Education and Experience/Minimum Qualifications:
• High school diploma required; coursework or experience in architecture, engineering, construction, or related field preferred but not required
• Experience with 3D scanning, surveying, or similar field data collection is preferred but not required
• Valid driver’s license and ability to travel extensively throughout Montana; including overnight trips
• May be asked to use own vehicle occasionally (mileage cost reimbursement provided)
• Ability to work independently with minimal supervision

• Comfortable working alone in unfamiliar or remote environments
• Strong attention to detail and accuracy
• Professional demeanor and ability to effectively communicate with tenants, building occupants, etc.
• Basic technical aptitude and ability to learn new equipment and software
• Effective verbal and written communication skills
• Organized and able to manage time and travel schedules efficiently
• Problem-solving skills and ability to adapt to changing field conditions
Minimum Physical/Mental Requirements.
• Ability to travel frequently and work in a variety of indoor and outdoor environments
• Standing, walking, and carrying equipment for extended periods
• Lift and move objects weighing up to 50 lbs
• Ability to work in occasionally inclement weather conditions
• Ability to safely navigate construction sites and existing buildings, and tight spaces
• Comfortable around heights, such as walking on a roof
• Comfortable with staying in unfamiliar hotels while travelling
• Careful and close attention to detail
• Observes and follows safety practices
