Job summary
The Planning Director provides strategic leadership and creative guidance for all planning and design related activities within a full-service consulting firm. This individual will also serve as a member of our leadership team, shaping the strategic vision and direction of the company. This senior-level position oversees a diverse team specializing in land planning, design, placemaking, and other related disciplines. This director is responsible for managing the Planning department's operations, including staffing, budgets, and profitability, while ensuring product quality and nurturing strong client relationships. The planning director oversees the entire project lifecycle, from initial conceptual planning/design, feasibility studies through the entitlements process. This position Reports to the President of company and the executive team.
Essential duties and responsibilities
- Business development: Actively participate in business development by preparing proposals, building new relationships, and representing the firm at client meetings and industry events.
- Client relations: Foster and maintain collaborative relationships with clients, regulatory agencies, and public stakeholders.
- Strategic leadership and management: Develop and implement strategies, policies, and procedures that align with the firm's objectives.
- Department oversight: Manage department staff, including hiring, training, and mentoring, and ensuring proper allocation of resources for all projects.
- Budget and resource management: Create, manage, and monitor departmental budgets, resource allocation, and project timelines to ensure efficiency and profitability.
- Financial management: Administer departmental budgets, oversee project profitability, and manage financial performance.
- Project oversight: Lead and manage the planning, design, and execution of multiple, complex projects, including urban planning, zoning, annexation, site plans, and preliminary plats.
- Project lifecycle management: Direct and manage the entire project lifecycle, ensuring successful execution from initial concept to completion.
- Quality and compliance: Ensure that designs and projects adhere to high-quality standards, safety policies, and all applicable codes and regulations.
- Quality assurance: Implement and monitor quality control standards to ensure all project deliverables and designs meet high-quality standards.
- Regulatory compliance: Ensure all projects adhere to local, state, and federal regulations regarding land use, zoning, and environmental impact.
Qualifications
- Education: A bachelor's degree in landscape architecture, planning or a related field is required.
- Experience: A minimum of 7 – 15 years of progressively responsible professional and managerial experience in civil engineering and land development consulting.
- Licensure: A Landscape Architecture license preferred but not required.
Required skills
- Leadership and management: Proven ability to lead, mentor and manage multidisciplinary engineering and planning teams.
- Project management: Strong experience managing project lifecycles, budgets, and schedules.
- Communication: Excellent verbal and written communication skills to effectively convey creative design information to all audiences.
- Regulatory knowledge: Comprehensive understanding of land use regulations, zoning ordinances, and permitting processes.
