Surveyor (Substation & Transmission Line)Position Overview

We are seeking an experienced Surveyor to support electrical infrastructure projects, including substations and transmission lines. This role combines field surveying, data processing, construction support, and coordination with engineering teams throughout all phases of project delivery.

Key ResponsibilitiesCore Surveying

• Establish and maintain horizontal and vertical control networks using recognized datums (State Plane, NAVD88, or project-specific systems).
• Plan and execute survey operations, including field methods, equipment selection, and QA/QC procedures.
• Recover, verify, and maintain existing survey control monuments.

Boundary & Right-of-Way (ROW)

• Perform boundary surveys and property research.
• Support transmission line right-of-way (ROW) surveys, staking, and documentation.
• Prepare and interpret:
• Easement mapping
• Legal descriptions
• Encroachment identification

Topographic Surveys

• Perform detailed topographic surveys for:
• Substation sites (grading, drainage, utilities, structures)
• Transmission line corridors (profiles, cross-sections, terrain mapping)
• Produce accurate surfaces, contours, and field-to-finish deliverables.

Transmission Line Surveying

• Survey and stake transmission line alignments, including:
• Centerline layout
• Angle points
• Dead-end structures
• Structure locations
• Support:
• Plan and profile development
• Clearance verification for roads, railroads, waterways, and utilities
• Survey data required for sag/tension and clearance analysis

Structure Layout

• Locate and document existing poles and transmission structures.
• Stake and verify new structure locations with high positional accuracy.
• Collect terrain and elevation data to support foundation design.

Utility Coordination

• Identify and map existing utilities using field observations and record information.
• Coordinate with Subsurface Utility Engineering (SUE) teams when required.
• Identify potential utility conflicts impacting design or construction.

Construction Staking

• Perform construction layout for:
• Substation foundations
• Equipment pads
• Fence lines
• Transmission structures
• Access roads
• Provide grading support, including cut/fill staking.
• Translate engineering drawings into accurate field layouts.

As-Built Surveys

• Complete as-built surveys following construction.
• Verify installations meet design tolerances.
• Deliver accurate final CAD and GIS documentation.

• AutoCAD Civil 3D
• MicroStation (preferred)
• GIS platforms (preferred)

Additional Technologies (Preferred)

• LiDAR
• Drone mapping
• Aerial survey data processing

Data Management & Deliverables

Ability to produce accurate, high-quality deliverables, including:

• Topographic maps
• Alignment profiles
• Control reports
• Easement plats
• Survey exhibits

Must demonstrate exceptional attention to documentation, QA/QC, and data accuracy.

Safety & Field Experience

• Strong commitment to safety in high-voltage and active construction environments.
• Knowledge of OSHA standards and utility safety practices.
• Experience working near energized substations or transmission infrastructure is highly preferred.
• Comfortable working in remote or rugged terrain under varying weather conditions.

Travel, Schedule & Compensation

• Approximately 70% travel to project sites throughout the region and other locations as needed.
• Daily per diem provided for qualifying travel assignments in accordance with company policy.
• Average work schedule of approximately 50 hours per week, with overtime opportunities based on project needs.
• Ability to work in remote locations and support extended field assignments.
• Flexibility to meet changing project schedules and field demands.

Successful candidates will have strong communication skills, collaborate effectively across disciplines, and provide regular survey updates throughout project execution.

Preferred Qualifications

• Professional Land Surveyor (PLS)
• Surveyor-in-Training (SIT)
• Experience in utility, power delivery, or EPC environments
• Background supporting heavy civil construction or crane/rigging operations
• Experience with clearance verification and lift planning support
