What are the responsibilities and job description for the Catalyst Features Editor position at Cutler Publications?
Passionate about longform storytelling, campus characters and human interest stories?
Lead our features section and oversee stories from weekly columns to hard-hitting real on campus stories. Editors decide the direction of their section, provide support for writers and help cultivate community within the Catalyst. Our editors are the bridge between writers and the paper itself. From editing stories to communicating with writers to directing their section, editors ensure that stories are up to par and on time. They also help uphold the culture and community of the Catalyst.
The bulk of the work for editors happens on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. By 5p.m. on Tuesdays, writers will have sent their stories in. On Tuesday night, each section editor, section copy editor and the managing editor will comb through the stories for both grammatical and content issues. On Wednesdays, editors typically come into the Pub House around 12:30 for Pub Day. This is when we edit all stories and put the paper together and ready for print. We serve lunch and have editors edit different sections as well as their own. If there is an issue with a specific story, it falls to the editors to communicate with the writer and find a solution. We ask that applicants have previous experience with writing and AP style.
In addition to Pub Days, editors also attend our weekly pitch meeting on Thursdays at 12:30 at the Pub House, where we dine on pizza and discuss story ideas for the next week. We also hold editor meetings twice a semester to discuss administrative matters.
