What are the responsibilities and job description for the Assembly Manager position at Custom Steel Supply?
About the Role
We’re looking for a Fab Shop Assembly Manager to take ownership of daily production flow through wash, paint, assembly, and final prep for shipment. You’ll be responsible for planning, scheduling, and leading a team to meet production targets with the highest standards of quality, efficiency, and safety.
This is a hands-on leadership role — ideal for someone with a background in fabrication, assembly, or mechanical production who thrives on solving problems, building strong teams, and keeping jobs moving on time.
What You’ll Do
Production Planning & Setup
- Review upcoming jobs and plan assembly line layouts, manpower, and materials 2–3 weeks in advance.
- Coordinate job setup — verifying tooling, hardware bins, and line configuration before start of production (SOP).
- Work with engineering and scheduling to forecast capacity and adjust manpower as needed.
Team Leadership
- Lead a team of welders, assemblers, and production associates to hit daily build rates and quality goals.
- Communicate clear expectations, timelines, and priorities for each shift.
- Coach and evaluate team members; handle performance reviews, attendance, and corrective actions.
Quality & Process Control
- Verify first-article builds (FA) before production release.
- Ensure all stations follow time standards, proper PPE, 5S, and safety procedures.
- Oversee use of nonconformance (NCR) tags and corrective actions.
Efficiency & Continuous Improvement
- Monitor real-time production data and drive improvements in throughput and accuracy.
- Identify bottlenecks and collaborate with maintenance, engineering, and management to improve line performance.
- Track consumables and coordinate replenishment to avoid downtime.
What You Bring
- 3 years of experience in a fabrication or assembly production environment, preferably supervising or leading teams.
- Strong understanding of manufacturing processes (weld, wash, paint, mechanical assembly).
- Comfortable reading prints, following work instructions, and using ERP/MRP systems.
- Excellent communication, organization, and leadership skills.
- Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, changing environment.
