Job Summary:
To coordinate and facilitate communication with site administration and MPS service departments; to supervise custodial staff assigned to site; to perform custodial duties as required by district standards; and to maintain the aesthetic appearance, functionality, and safety of school facility and campus.
Prior to employment or during the first 3 months of new hire probationary period, drug and alcohol testing shall be required of all new contract employees who work in Custodial. Any applicants having a confirmed positive test shall not be eligible for employment.
Key Responsibilities:
- Coordinate the timely execution of all custodial functions to ensure the cleanliness and safe conditions of the school environment
- Work with site custodial staff, custodial supervisor, and Operations leadership to create work plans that provide optimum levels of service to school site and campus
- Conduct scheduled site inspections according to MPS approved standards to ensure the aesthetic appearance, functionality, and safety of school facility and campus
- Assign daily tasks and workload to site day custodian; check work assignments daily; train and monitor day custodian
- Direct site lead custodian in the development of work plans and work area assignments for all custodial staff
- Direct and monitor site custodial staff training
- Supervise and assist with many diversified tasks (i.e. heating, cooling, lights, security of facility, coordination with other departments for special projects, etc.) each day to maintain the school facility
- Perform cleaning and monitor maintenance tasks required for facility upkeep and preventive maintenance
- Coordinate site cleanup and aesthetics with site grounds lead
- Submit work requests, in a timely manner, on reported or observed cosmetic and/or functional campus issues
- Communicate with site administration on a regularly scheduled basis regarding site issues and progress of work order requests
- Supervise and assist in summer clean up as directed by supervisor
- Implement instructions for administrators and custodial supervisor for special events; schedule custodians to work special events at school site
- Maintain site custodial payroll records and submit reports to district custodial office
- Track extra time for student fund events and overtime and report to custodial payroll in a timely manner
- Order custodial supplies to ensure sufficient supply and availability
- Conduct performance evaluations on site custodial staff with custodial area supervisor; conduct performance evaluations on site day custodian with site administrator or designee
- On-call availability at all times for site emergencies
- Regular and on-time attendance required
- Assists with other assigned duties as appropriate to the area of assignment and Mesa Public Schools
Required Qualifications:
- High School education or equivalent
- High School education or equivalent preferred
- Minimum two years custodial experience
- Minimum two years supervisory experience

- Computer proficiency to include use of basic software applications (Word, Excel, etc.)
- Record keeping experience preferred
- Ability to communicate effectively (verbal and written)
- Ability to instruct and assist custodial staff in the correct procedures to perform duties
- Knowledge of industrial custodial equipment, supplies, and proper cleaning procedures
- Ability to plan and organize effectively, work independently and under pressure with minimum supervision
- Ability to supervise employees and resolve personnel and custodial issues
- Ability to establish and to maintain effective and cooperative working relationships with site and district personnel at all levels
Work Environment & Physical Requirements:
- Responsibilities involve maintaining classrooms, hallways, offices, restrooms, cafeterias, gymnasiums, and outdoor areas
- Regular use of disinfectants, detergents, and other cleaning agents
- Ability to perform heavy manual labor as required
- May need to use ladders or scaffolding for repairs, changing lights, or cleaning high surfaces
- May include early mornings, evenings, weekends, and emergency call-ins
- Ability to lift approximately 50 pounds
