Coin Processing & Auction Assistant

Amateur Numismatist

Location: Jacksonville, Florida
Employment Type: Part-time or Full-time
Schedule: To be determined
Compensation: Based on experience

Position Overview

We are looking for a careful, reliable, and detail-oriented Coin Processing & Auction Assistant with a genuine interest in historical, collectible, and valuable coins.

This role is ideal for an amateur numismatist, coin collector, history enthusiast, or someone with previous experience working with coins, collectibles, antiques, precious metals, or online auctions. Professional numismatic experience is not required, but candidates should be eager to learn and comfortable handling collectible items responsibly.

The employee will assist with processing incoming coins, organizing inventory, preparing items for sale, and supporting live and online auction operations.

Responsibilities

  • Carefully receive, handle, sort, and organize collectible coins and related items.
  • Follow proper coin-handling procedures to avoid fingerprints, scratches, cleaning, damage, or unnecessary contact with coin surfaces.
  • Identify basic coin information, including country, denomination, year, mint mark, metal type, and general condition.
  • Separate coins by category, value, condition, or selling method.
  • Place coins in appropriate holders, flips, capsules, storage containers, or auction trays.
  • Enter accurate coin and inventory information into spreadsheets, auction platforms, or inventory-management systems.
  • Assist with researching coins using reference books, trusted websites, grading guides, and recent auction results.
  • Photograph coins and collectible items clearly for online listings.
  • Prepare accurate item titles and basic descriptions for auctions and online sales.
  • Assign inventory numbers, labels, or barcodes and ensure each item remains properly matched with its records.
  • Prepare coins for live auctions, online auctions, direct sales, or customer orders.
  • Assist during auctions by organizing lots, locating items, tracking sales, and supporting the auction host.
  • Package sold coins securely and accurately for shipping.
  • Help verify customer orders before shipment.
  • Maintain a clean, secure, and organized coin-processing workspace.
  • Report damaged, suspicious, potentially counterfeit, or unusually valuable items to management.
  • Follow all security, confidentiality, inventory-control, and loss-prevention procedures.
  • Perform other coin, auction, inventory, or order-processing tasks as needed.

Required Qualifications

  • Genuine interest in collectible coins, historical currency, numismatics, auctions, antiques, or related collectibles.
  • Careful and respectful when handling valuable or fragile items.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to notice differences in dates, mint marks, varieties, and condition.
  • Honest, dependable, organized, and able to follow established procedures.
  • Comfortable performing repetitive processing tasks while maintaining accuracy.
  • Basic computer skills and ability to learn spreadsheets, inventory systems, and auction platforms.
  • Ability to read small dates, markings, and labels with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality regarding inventory, customers, security procedures, and item values.
  • Willingness to learn basic coin identification, grading terminology, and proper handling techniques.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Personal experience collecting coins, paper money, tokens, medals, bullion, antiques, or historical objects.
  • Familiarity with United States or world coins.
  • Basic understanding of coin grading, mint marks, key dates, errors, varieties, or precious-metal content.
  • Experience with live auctions, online auctions, estate sales, antique stores, pawn shops, jewelry stores, or collectible businesses.
  • Experience using auction or e-commerce platforms such as Whatnot, eBay, Shopify, or similar systems.
  • Experience photographing small products or writing online listings.
  • Familiarity with coin references, price guides, auction archives, or grading companies such as PCGS, NGC, or ANACS.
  • Experience with inventory management, order fulfillment, shipping, or quality control.

Physical and Work Requirements

  • Ability to sit or stand for extended periods while sorting and processing inventory.
  • Ability to use magnifying tools, scales, cameras, computers, and small-item packaging materials.
  • Ability to lift and carry boxes weighing approximately 25 pounds.
  • Ability to work in an environment where accuracy, security, and careful handling are essential.

What We Are Looking For

The ideal candidate does not need to be a professional coin dealer or expert grader. We are looking for someone who enjoys coins and history, takes pride in careful work, follows instructions, and wants to develop practical experience in the numismatic and auction industry.

Because this position involves access to collectible and potentially valuable inventory, reliability, honesty, and attention to detail are essential.
