This is a generalist position where the employee performs routine and standardized tests in the areas of chemistry, urinalysis, serology, microbiology, and hematology. Established quality control procedures and instrument maintenance are part of the daily duties of the Laboratory Technologist.
This position supports laboratory operations by helping expedite turnaround times and manage increased testing volume. The employee serves as an assistant to the Laboratory Supervisor and may assume responsibility in their absence.
- Enter patient demographics, clinic location, provider information and orders lab tests in the laboratory information system.
- Examines laboratory specimens for specimen integrity.
- Performs the following laboratory tests:
- Urine cultures
- Urinalysis
- Urine microscopics
- Gonorrhoeae cultures
- Wet preps
- Gram stains
- KOH preps
- CBC's
- Serum and urine pregnancy test
- Rapid streps
- Hemocue glucose/hemoglobin
- Process and ship all labs outsourced to the State Lab.
- Perform and document established quality control for each section of the laboratory.
- Perform routine maintenance and calibration on hematology, urinalysis, hemoglobin and glucose analyzers.
- Stocks and inventories supplies.
Employee is subject to be called upon anytime to help the agency respond to a public health emergency which may include, but is not limited to, outbreak investigations, staffing mass dispensing or immunization clinics, providing disaster relief, or other incidents (man-made or natural and intentional or non-intentional) as they arise, or any public health response requested by the Health Director.

- Considerable theoretical knowledge of the variety of laboratory procedures applicable to the area(s) of work.
- Considerable theoretical knowledge of laboratory equipment, instrumentation, and terminology.
- General knowledge of the basic pathophysiological processes being monitored and how the medical laboratory science is applied.
- Skill in the use of laboratory equipment and in the performance of procedures.
- Ability to make accurate observations and written reports of test results.
- Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
- Ability to instruct medical technology students and other health professionals in laboratory procedures and instrumentation.
- Ability to supervise the work of others; ability to research procedures and methods and implement necessary changes.
