Perform a vital role in ensuring the safe, efficient, and reliable operation of Cumberland County facilities as part of the Internal Services Department. The Facilities Management Division is responsible for repairing, replacing, and performing preventive maintenance on County buildings and their mechanical systems.
This position performs skilled, journeyman-level maintenance work within the Detention Center under general supervision. The role involves a wide range of building maintenance tasks, including the operation, inspection, and repair of electrical, mechanical, and plumbing systems to support continuous facility operations. The employee is also responsible for maintaining inventories of supplies, materials, and equipment necessary to support assigned facilities. This position contributes to the overall functionality, safety, and regulatory compliance of County facilities while performing related duties as required.
- Perform general to skilled plumbing work, including installation, maintenance, and repair of water and sanitary systems and related fixtures
- Repair and maintain plumbing components such as faucets, washers, stems, seals, toilets, and water coolers to ensure proper functionality
- Diagnose and clear clogged lines using appropriate equipment, including rotor machines and hand tools
- Inspect, repair, and replace fire sprinkler heads in accordance with applicable safety standards and regulations
- Perform general to skilled HVAC work, including installation, maintenance, and repair of heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems
- Inspect and service HVAC components such as thermostats, belts, bearings, motors, filters, compressors, and coils; monitor air quality, humidity, and ventilation systems
- Perform general to skilled electrical work, including installation of conduits and fittings, and routing and pulling wiring for various systems
- Repair and maintain electrical systems and components, including switches, sockets, plugs, fuses, appliances, and related equipment to ensure safe and reliable operation
Graduation from high school or GED and one and one-half (1.5) years of experience and/or training in maintenance or building trades work; or an equivalent combination of education training, and experience.
Must meet industrial physical examination for sight, hearing, cardiovascular, pulmonary, chest x-rays, blood pressure, blood sugar and lead levels, chemistry profiles such as cholesterol and liver functioning, etc., prior to employment.
- Knowledge of the procedures, materials, and equipment related to plumbing, electrical, and HVAC maintenance trades
- Knowledge of occupational hazards associated with building trades and grounds maintenance work, including applicable safety precautions and practices
- Knowledge of County purchasing policies and procedures and their general application
- Knowledge of basic principles of organization and administration as they relate to maintenance operations
- Skill in the safe and effective use and maintenance of a variety of hand and power tools required for assigned tasks
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and technical specifications accurately
- Ability to perform manual labor for extended periods under varying work conditions as required by job assignments
- Ability to exercise tact, professionalism, and courtesy when interacting with the public
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers, supervisors, and other stakeholders
Conditions of Employment
This position requires North Carolina Fire Sprinkler Maintenance Technician license within three (3) years of hire.
Driving is an essential function of this position. To be considered, you must have a valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record. If your driver's license is from another state, you will be required to obtain and show proof of a valid NC driver's license within 60 days of hire.
