TITLE: Heavy Equipment Operator I                       

                                                                                   

FLSA STATUS: Non-Exempt

 

QUALIFICATIONS:                  

Completion of high school and experience in grounds maintenance and heavy equipment operation.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

Performs district-wide grounds maintenance duties, to include athletic fields, playgrounds, driveways, paths, parking areas, storm water drainage and fencing.

 

Performs grounds maintenance duties, using tractor equipped with attachments, such as mowers, lime or fertilizer spreaders, lawn roller, etc.

 

Levels grounds, grades athletic fields, constructs running tracks and walking paths, digs ditches and footers, and landscapes school grounds.

 

Trims, prunes, shovels, rakes and hand digs as necessary to complete work assignment.

 

Possesses knowledge of various types and characteristics of grounds maintenance materials and equipment.

 

Possesses working knowledge of the techniques, methods, tools and safety precautions of the

grounds trade.

 

Possesses knowledge of equipment used by a commercial grounds crew – tractor, back hoe, dump truck, chain saws, graders, etc.

 

Makes minor repairs and adjustments to tools and equipment.

 

Understands and works from oral or written instructions, blueprints and specifications.

 

Attends and successfully completes all training activities as required to improve ability and knowledge in performance of work duties.

 

Serves as team player and role model for other employees in the organization; demonstrates a commitment to continuous quality improvement; supports and exhibits organizational core values of caring, respect, integrity, responsibility, high expectations, being customer driven, and valuing fairness.

 

Performs other duties and accepts responsibilities as assigned.

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

 

The employee must be able to demonstrate the following physical demands to safely and productively perform the essential functions of the Grounds position.  The job requires constant standing/walking on level and uneven terrain, work below waist level, and material handling/tool use; Frequent work form waist to chest level; and occasional climbing, hand/foot control use, and work above chest level. The employee must be able to lift/carry 25 lbs. constantly, 50 lbs. frequently and 80 lbs. occasionally. The employee must be able to exert up to 100 lbs. overhead and 75 lbs./force at knuckle to waist level. The employee must be able to work in confined spaces requiring entry to 24’ x 24’ spaces occasionally. The employee must be able to tolerate the above job demands on a regular schedule and as assigned.

 

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

 

Background check with local and state law enforcement agencies required.

Must possess a valid North Carolina driver’s license.

Must obtain a Class A license within 90 days of employment.
