JOB DESCRIPTION
JOB TITLE: MECHANIC - HEAVY DUTY
Reports to: MANAGING DIRECTOR - SOLID WASTE COMPLEX
Classification: CRAFT WORKER Department: FLEET MAINTENANCE
Exempt Category: NON-EXEMPT
JOB PURPOSE: The Heavy Duty Mechanic is responsible for the preventative maintenance and mechanical repairs on all Authority vehicles and equipment; as well as all County vehicles brought to the SWC Fleet Services garage for repair or maintenance.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
- Repairs automotive and heavy equipment to include the repair of gasoline and/or diesel engines; repair of electrical systems including lights, wiring and A/C and D/C motors; repair of hydraulic, air cooling and pneumatic systems; repair and adjustment to drive train and brakes.
- Repairs to snow and ice equipment to include computerized controls, electric over hydraulic controls, sanders, pre-wet and anti-ice liquid systems.
- Inspects defective and malfunctioning equipment and performs diagnostic tests using engine and charging system analyzers, pressure gauges, laptop computers with diagnostic software and other equipment as required.
- Dismantles and repairs internal combustion engines, transmissions, pumps, auxiliary equipment, generators, compressors, and clutches.
- Changes lubricants and filters. Performs other preventive maintenance functions as necessary. Performs safety inspections on any/all assigned equipment.
- Performs service calls in the field. May recommend evacuation of equipment to a primary repair facility or outside vendor. Service calls may also be required after normal shop hours on an on-call basis.
- Have or be capable of obtaining certification to service or repair A/C systems and perform heavy duty opacity diesel emissions.
- OTHER DUTIES: On call during snow season.
- Must be able to work weekends if needed.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: A technician at the Certified (advanced skill) level is capable of correctly making most common fault diagnosis and properly performing most common repairs with limited supervision or direction, and with the occasional assistance of another individual. (No Requirement to move beyond CERTIFIED level.)
- High School diploma or GED required.
- Graduate of an approved technical automotive program desirable.
- Must possess computer skills for inventory tracking.
- 1 to 2 years of experience preferred but not required.
- Experience in repair of heavy diesel equipment strongly recommended.
- Experience in repair of automobile, truck, and equipment strongly recommended.
LICENSING AND CERTIFICATION:
- Valid New Jersey Driver’s license required with CDL preferred
- Ability to receive additional endorsements
- Train in and pass CNG Certification Testing as provided by the Authority
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
- Must have strong working of all tools and equipment used in the successful completion of assignments
- Knowledge of practical application of automotive repair principles
- Understanding of safe operating procedures in the use of chemicals, their interactions, danger signs, production techniques and disposal methods
- Ability to read and write sufficiently to have a full understanding of technical manuals, schematics, and diagnostic programs.
- Must possess computer experience with data base programs.
- Ability to repair, trouble shoot, maintain, install, select and operate equipment and vehicles at the Solid Waste Complex
- Must exhibit analytical and critical thinking skills as may be necessary in the successful completion of the job
- Must be able to plan and coordinate work
- Must have strong interpersonal skills and be service oriented
- Must be able to communicate effectively in writing as well as orally
- Be willing to learn
- Obtain and maintain any-and-all certifications required by the Authority
- Ability to recognize when there is a problem and seek assistance
