Job Description Summary
The Nursing and Allied Health Division at Cuesta College is looking for a Full-Time Tenure Track Emergency Medical Technologies Faculty. The program currently includes Paramedicine and EMT courses. The courses are offered on both the San Luis Obispo and Paso Robles campuses. This program is taught in Fall, Spring, and Summer. While the position is a 175-day employee, there is an expectation that the candidate will teach in the Summer. Both the Paramedic and EMT programs have high NREMT pass rates. The Allied Health Department is seeking a faculty member with strong teamwork and collaboration skills to join us in our pursuit of student success and professional excellence. The Full Time Tenure Track faculty responsibilities include teaching assignments in theory courses, skills laboratory supervision, and community-based field learning. Professional development is encouraged and supported. Instruction incorporates state of the art equipment equal to current standards as well as modern technology in the classroom. Students benefit from the strong relationships we have with our community internship and clinical partners.

TEACHING RESPONSIBILITIES:
Faculty are responsible for choosing appropriate course materials, developing a student- centered equity-minded syllabus adhering to a college-approved Course Outline of Record, outlining classroom expectations, and content to be covered as well as developing a plan for content delivery. This position requires regular communication with students throughout the semester, office hour availability, assigning grades, and referral of students to appropriate support services, as needed. Instructors may be expected to become online teaching certified, if not already certified.

Evidence of Outstanding Ability as a Paramedicine Instructor
Appropriate evidence for the candidate includes, but is not limited to, experience, training, or achievement:

Commitment staying up-to-date with the latest developments in nursing and nursing education and in collaboration with industry and/or professional organizations;
Ability to continuously reflect, evaluate, and improve teaching methods;
Ability to organize and explain materials/instructions in an appropriate manner to address students' abilities and learning styles;
Ability to use teaching methods that engage students actively in their own learning, promote development of critical thinking and clinical reasoning skills and encourages students to become lifelong learners;
Ability to use instructional methods that emphasize cultural sensitivity;
Ability to motivate students from a broad spectrum of cultural, academic, socioeconomic, and language backgrounds;
Ability to develop and assess student learning outcomes, as well as identifying methods for achievement of those outcomes.
COLLEGE AND DEPARTMENTAL RESPONSIBILITIES
College or departmental responsibilities will include the following:

Developing, participating, and/or updating program curriculum;
Completing and submitting course assessments and evaluations;
Serving on college committees (Participatory Governance);
Participating and contributing to program review;
Participating in Peer evaluations and hiring committees;
Scheduling and working with full-time and part-time instructors in the department;
Collaborating with classified staff and program director;
Serve as a liaison for community healthcare organizations;
Collegial, professional, and ethical conduct;
Distance Education Certification (by end of Fall 2023).

Essential Functions & Qualifications

Required:
  • Any Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution and two years of professional experience directly related to the teaching assignment;
OR

  • Any Associate's degree from an accredited institution and six years of professional experience directly related to the teaching assignment;
OR

  • The equivalent. (Candidates making application on the basis of equivalency must submit all materials requested for an equivalency judgment. For directions on what is an acceptable equivalency argument please review the requirements listed on the HR Website .)
OR

  • A valid Community College credential in the discipline (If received prior to 1990, as the credential is no longer being issued).
Also Required:
  • Sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.
Preferred:Per Title 22, Division 9, Chapter 4, Article 3:
(1) Be a physician, registered nurse, physician assistant, or paramedic, currently certified or licensed in the State of California.
(2) Be knowledgeable in the course content of the January 2009 United States Department of Transportation (U.S. DOT) National Emergency Medical Services Education Standards DOT HS 811 077 E, herein incorporated by reference; and
(3) Have six (6) years of experience in an allied health field and an associate degree or two (2) years of experience in an allied health field and a baccalaureate degree.
(4) Be qualified by education and experience with at least forty (40) hours of documented teaching methodology instruction in areas related to methods, materials, and evaluation of instruction or a willingness to enroll in the teaching course upon hire
(5) current CCP certification or a flight paramedic (FP) certification from the International Board of Specialty Certification (IBSC) Board for Critical Care Transport Paramedic Certification (BCCTPC).

Desirable:
  • Teaching experience in the discipline, community college level preferred;-Awareness of the philosophy and objectives of California Community Colleges.
