Job Summary:

The Marcus Institute for Brain Health (MIBH) at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus is a nationally recognized leader in clinical care, research, and education related to Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) and co-occurring psychological health conditions. MIBH provides specialized, evidence-based care to active-duty service members, Veterans, and first responders with persistent and complex symptoms following TBI.

MIBH delivers care through a structured Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) that includes comprehensive diagnostic evaluation and individualized treatment planning. Care is provided through a co-located interdisciplinary team model that integrates conventional Western medicine with evidence-based integrative therapies.

• The Marcus Institute for Brain Health (MIBH) Director of Finance & Administration (DFA) is an in-person position and serves as a strategic and operational leader responsible for the financial stewardship, administrative infrastructure, and long-term sustainability of the Marcus Institute for Brain Health (MIBH). This role is central to advancing MIBH's mission to deliver world-class care for service members, veterans, and others impacted by traumatic brain injury (TBI), with a strong emphasis on innovative care models supported by philanthropic investment.

• MIBH operates within a complex funding model that includes philanthropic support, clinical revenue, grants, and institutional funding. The DFA plays a critical role in advancing a sustainable financial future by diversifying revenue streams, optimizing financial performance, and strengthening operational systems.

• A central priority of this role is expanding earned revenue through insurance reimbursement and enhancing revenue cycle performance. This includes leadership in billing, coding, and reimbursement optimization to support scalable, high-quality clinical care.

• This position represents a unique opportunity to help guide a nationally recognized brain health institute through a pivotal period of growth transitioning from a predominantly philanthropic model to a balanced, sustainable enterprise while preserving innovation and mission impact.

• The DFA partners closely with the Executive Director, MIBH Leadership, clinical leadership, CU Medicine, and University stakeholders to align financial strategy with clinical operations, research expansion, and national impact.

Role & Organizational Impact

• The DFA directs all business operations of MIBH and serves as the Fund Administrator, with authority over the Institute's financial resources and administrative infrastructure. The incumbent represents MIBH across the Anschutz Medical Campus, CU Medicine, and the University of Colorado, ensuring effective communication, collaboration, and operational integration.

• This role provides leadership across finance, clinical business operations, grants, human resources, compliance, and administrative systems, ensuring alignment with institutional priorities and Institute goals.

  • Supervision Exercised: Provides administrative leadership and oversight for staff supporting financial operations, clinical administration, human resources, grants, and reporting functions. Ensures appropriate staffing, structure, and expertise are in place to support clinical reimbursement, billing and coding, grant administration, and day-to-day Institute operations.

Key Responsibilities:

Strategic Financial Leadership & Sustainability (20%)

• Working with Executive Director and MIBH Leadership team to develop and execute a multi-year financial strategy to advance long-term fiscal sustainability.

• Build and manage a diversified funding model integrating philanthropy, clinical revenue, grants, and institutional support.

• Advise leadership on financial planning, risk management, and growth opportunities.

• Conduct scenario modeling and long-range financial planning to mitigate fiscal risk and support fiscal sustainability.

Financial Management & Fund Stewardship (15%)

• Direct all financial activities, including budgeting, forecasting, reporting, and cash flow management across all funding sources:

  • Clinical revenue

  • Philanthropic gifts and endowments

  • Sponsored research and contracts

  • Institutional and state funding

• Ensure compliance with University, State, Federal, and sponsor regulations.

• Prepare and present financial reports, including revenue, cost, and salary analyses.

• Oversee financial systems, internal controls, and reporting infrastructure.

• Manage financial interactions with CU Medicine, CU School of Medicine, CU Foundation, University of Colorado Hospital, and affiliated partners.

Revenue Cycle & Clinical Finance Optimization (20%)

• Lead revenue cycle strategy, including billing, coding, and reimbursement optimization.

• Partner with CU Medicine and clinical leadership to improve documentation, coding accuracy, and payer compliance.

• Analyze payer mix, reimbursement trends, and denials to improve performance.

• Expand insurance-based revenue and reduce reliance on philanthropic funding.

• Monitor provider productivity, clinical activity, and revenue generation.

Clinical Business Operations (5%)

• Oversee financial performance and operational effectiveness of clinical programs.

• Manage clinical contracts, program budgets, and financial reporting.

• Evaluate new program opportunities and assess sustainability and ROI.

• Ensure accurate tracking of clinical activity, time allocation, and revenue.

Grants & Contracts Management (10%)

• Oversee all pre- and post-award grant and contract activities, including budgeting, compliance, and reporting.

• Ensure accurate allocation of expenditures and personnel effort.

• Manage indirect cost recovery (ICR) distribution and related agreements.

• Provide final review for contracts, budgets, and commitments.

Human Resources Administration (5%)

• Oversee HR functions including recruitment, hiring, compensation, performance management, and staff development.

• Ensure compliance with university policies and procedures.

Policy, Compliance & Risk Management (10%)

• Interpret and apply University, State, and Federal policies.

• Develop and implement Institute-specific policies as needed.

• Review contracts, agreements, and legal documents in collaboration with university counsel.

• Identify and mitigate operational and financial risks.

Operations, Facilities & Procurement (5%)

• Oversee procurement, vendor management, and contract negotiations.

• Manage facilities, leases, space planning, and capital projects.

• Coordinate purchasing activities in compliance with university policies.

Information Systems & Data Management (5%)

• Oversee administrative and financial systems, ensuring functionality and efficiency.

• Partner with IT resources to maintain infrastructure.

• Develop dashboards and reporting tools to support performance monitoring and decision-making.

Strategic Planning (5%)

• Participate in MIBH strategic planning efforts.

• Provide financial and operational insights to guide growth, staffing, and infrastructure decisions.

• Align financial strategy with MIBH's mission and long-term vision.

Work Location:

Onsite - this role is expected to work onsite and is located in Aurora, CO with a potential for hybrid of 1 day remote.

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:

• Bachelor's degree in finance, Accounting, Business Administration, Healthcare Administration, or related field from an accredited institution.

• Minimum of 8 years of progressive leadership experience in finance and administration

• Experience managing complex budgets with multiple funding streams, including clinical, philanthropy and grant funding.

• Experience overseeing financial and human resource operations.

  • An advanced degree (Masters or Doctorate) may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis if the degree is in a field of study directly related to the work assignment.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Master's degree in finance, Accounting, Business Administration, Healthcare Administration, or related field from an accredited institution.

• Finance and administration experience in academic medical center, healthcare, or nonprofit setting

• Direct experience in billing, coding, and reimbursement optimization.

• Experience with CU systems (PeopleSoft HCM/FIS, Concur).

• Experience supporting clinical program growth and strategic initiatives.

Anticipated Pay Range:

The starting salary range (or hiring range) for this position has been established as HIRING RANGE $119,289 - $159,847
