Jr. Mechanical Engineer

Description:
We are seeking a Mechanical Engineer with refinery experience to support our Mechanical Integrity and Inspection programs. This position is ideal for an entry-level to early-career engineer who is eager to develop hands-on refinery experience while working closely with inspection, reliability, and maintenance teams.
The successful candidate will assist the Inspection Group by performing minimum required thickness calculations for piping systems, evaluating inspection findings, and implementing the refinery's Thin Response Protocol when thinning or corrosion issues are identified. Depending on experience and performance, the engineer will have opportunities to participate in additional mechanical integrity, reliability, and refinery engineering projects.
Essential Responsibilities
- Support the refinery Inspection Group with piping and equipment evaluations.
- Perform minimum required thickness calculations for piping systems and pressure-containing equipment.
- Review inspection reports and corrosion data to determine equipment fitness for continued service.
- Implement and document actions required under the refinery's Thin Response Protocol.
- Assist with mechanical integrity assessments and risk-based decision making.
- Participate in field walkdowns and inspections to verify equipment conditions and collect engineering data.
- Work closely with Operations, Maintenance, Inspection, and Reliability teams to resolve equipment issues.
- Prepare engineering calculations, technical reports, and recommendations.
- Support special projects and other refinery engineering activities as assigned.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering from an accredited university.
- 0-5 years of engineering experience, preferably in refining, petrochemical, or heavy industrial facilities.
- Understanding of piping systems, pressure vessels, and refinery mechanical equipment.
- Familiarity with engineering calculations related to pressure design and minimum thickness requirements.
- Knowledge of industry codes and standards such as:
- API 570 – Piping Inspection Code
- API 510 – Pressure Vessel Inspection Code
- API 579 – Fitness-for-Service (preferred)
- ASME B31.3 – Process Piping
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent communication skills and ability to work effectively in a team environment.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications; experience with engineering software is a plus.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous refinery or petrochemical internship/co-op experience.
- Exposure to corrosion monitoring or mechanical integrity programs.
- Experience working with inspection or reliability teams.
- EIT certification or progress toward Professional Engineer (PE) licensure is a plus.
