Job Goals:
The primary job goals of the Transition to Work classroom teacher are to provide high quality instruction to adult students in the areas of employment, post-secondary education and training, daily living, and community participation.
This program is located at and in partnership with Charles River Labs, Int. (CRL) in Mattawan, MI. Students participate in half day internships in a variety of departments within CRL, practicing a variety of job skills. The other half of their day includes classroom instruction and independent study related to Adult Living, Community Access/Participation, Employment, and Self Advocacy.
In addition, the special education teacher will collaborate with CRL management, department heads, and employees to provide a variety of internship rotations to students with a mutually beneficial outcome. Additionally, collaboration with parents, agency professionals, community members, administrators, and the consultation team to make data-based decisions to produce student progress toward IEP goals is required.
Qualifications:
Education:
Bachelor's Degree in Education required
Certification:
Michigan teaching certificate with an endorsement in special education required
Work Experience:
At least three years of experience working with adults or high-schoolers with disabilities is preferred. Experience in employment readiness programs and/or industry preferred.
Skills:
- Demonstrate expertise in teaching transition age students with disabilities.
- Possess working familiarity with a variety of disability areas and the instruction of daily living and social skills.
- Understanding and experience with industry expectations outside of education and ability to blend the two areas.
- Ability to communicate information and expertise to others in a supportive and professional way.
- Knowledge of paperwork and rules related to Work Based Learning (WBL) and ability to complete all necessary paperwork in an accurate and timely manner.
- Willingness to communicate and collaborate with parents, agency professionals, community members, administrators, and the consultation team to achieve the maximum benefit for students.
- Ability to lead and support the work of program assistants.
- Knowledge and expertise with curricula and materials relevant to transition.
- Experience and ability to lead:
- The educational planning for assigned caseload
- The development of student or classroom procedures and plans
- The evaluation and data collection of student progress
- General professional skills, including a willingness to:
- Make child-centered decisions.
- Assume positive intentions when working with others.
- Adhere to federal, state and VBISD policies and procedures.
- Model VBISD guidelines: Respect, Integrity, Compassion and Excellence.
- Complete assigned responsibilities within agreed upon timelines.
- Seek ongoing professional learning and accept feedback in a professional way.
- Perform additional tasks, responsibilities and duties as assigned by the Director of Special Education and the Superintendent.
Essential Job Functions:
- Ability to sit and work on a computer for long periods of time.
- Ability to walk/navigate long hallways, stairs, etc. (up to 3 miles/day)
- Ability to lift 15 pounds.
- Ability to stand for extended periods.
- Valid driver's license required.
Terms of Employment: As per master agreement and provisions established by the Van Buren Board of Education.
