Job Summary - Lead Sr Agile Coach

Serves as an Information Technology (IT) leader, responsible for managing a diverse, matrixed group of Agile Coaches aligned to software development, IT operations and/or Enterprise Services teams. Ensures iterative delivery, continuous improvement practices; collaborates on Agile roadmap; champions governance; enhances strategic portfolio management. Focuses on employee development and growth, along with direct involvement in Scaled Agile practices including Scrum, Kanban, CI/CD, and DevOps frameworks in support of accelerated CSX delivery.

Primary Activities and Responsibilities
  • Organize, direct, and work with a team of high-skilled individuals; identify and support necessary professional development as well as growth in support of career aspirations; lead with consistency and integrity
  • Collaborate across Technology organization (Product Management, Enterprise Engineering, IT Operations, Enterprise Services) leaders to align delivery capacity to organizational priority and emerging needs
  • Gather, analyze, and present quantitative and qualitative metrics to inform the continuous improvement of the development processes and team integrations
  • Ensure comprehensive coverage and enable organization accountability for standard implementation of Agile practice; coordinate and facilitate events for cross-domain planning, synchronization, demonstrations, and continuous improvement
  • Maintain awareness of product value delivery (including budget, forecast, and risk); identify impediments, evaluate solutions, and monitor their effect on complex systems; ensure continuous improvement through team action plans
  • Coaches and guides Agile Coaches; also coaches Product Managers and Product leadership, (Software/Enterprise) Engineering development teams and leadership; leverages 1:1 mentoring and group engagement with a focus on optimization of the entire delivery system
  • Supports and mentors department talent; establishes and advances best practices across product/program aligned Agile Coaches and delivery portfolio management
  • Compile disparate information, form logical conclusions, and present the information in a cohesive, intelligible manner; publish and maintain Agile practice KPIs; coordinate Agile coaches
  • Manage departmental personnel, budget, and resources including financial responsibility for projects within span of control
  • Follow best practices around developing and maintaining secure systems
  • Miscellaneous activities and responsibilities as assigned by manager


Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree/4-year Degree
  • 5 or more years of experience in managing or leading IT projects; working with Agile teams and Frameworks

Equivalent Minimum Qualifications
  • High School Diploma/GED
  • 7 or more years of experience in managing or leading IT projects; working with Agile teams and frameworks

Preferred Qualifications
  • Graduate Degree
  • 10 or more years of experience in managing or leading Transportation/Logistics/Rail Operations IT projects
  • 2 or more years of supervisory experience
  • PMI-ACP, CSM, CTC, CEC, or equivalent certifications
  • Certifications/Licenses: SAFe (Scaled) Certifications, Certified Release Train Engineer, Certified Scrum Master, Certified Scrum Professional, Certified Team or Enterprise Coach, PMI-ACP
  • Experience with leading Scaled Agile program planning, risk management, and coaching program level initiatives

Knowledge and Skills
  • Focus on value-creation, coupled with the initiative to act and accountability to rapidly inspect and adapt
  • Desire to lead a diverse, matrixed team, including coaching, skills inventory assessment and creation of meaningful development plans; conflict management and problem resolution skills
  • Practiced familiarity with iterative software delivery, including Agile development frameworks such as Kanban, Scrum, and Scaled Agile (SAFe); ability to constructively guide coaching efforts to ensure optimal outcomes
  • Ability to influence executives, leaders, business units, and technology teams on Agile and it's contribution to the company strategic direction
  • Commitment to collaboration and enterprise-wide teamwork, bolstered by effective written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to navigate through complex and ambiguous situations while serving as the procedural expert, change agent, and employee advocate; balanced, but significant, drive for change in pursuit of continuous improvement
  • Effectively audit and guide team action plans, and facilitate change management
  • Strategic thinking and ability to influence at various levels, leading a matrixed, cross-functional team
  • Ability to anticipate and analyze problems, resolves issues through creative problem solving, and manage multiple assignments and changing priorities
  • Understanding of IT Operations and DEVOPS/DEVSECOPS concepts
  • Ability to work effectively in a collaborative remote environment
