About the Position
The Vivarium Technician provides daily care and husbandry for laboratory animals housed in the CSUDH vivarium. These primarily include zebrafish, goldfish, guppies, mice, and/or rats. This position supports biomedical research by maintaining animal health, ensuring facility cleanliness, and following all animal welfare and regulatory standards.
Position Information
Employment at Toro Auxiliary Partners is on an at-will basis. It can be terminated by either an employee or Toro Auxiliary Partners at any time with or without cause or advanced notice. Permanent status can neither be obtained nor granted.
This position is full-time, non-exempt, benefited, plus employer-sponsored health, dental, vision, life insurance, retirement, and sick/vacation pay.
Hourly Rate: $22.00 to $26.00 Depending on Experience
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Animal Husbandry - Fish
- Provide daily care for laboratory zebrafish and other fish species, including feeding, weekly water quality testing, and refilling buffer tanks as needed.
- Monitor animals for signs of illness, distress, or abnormal behavior and report concerns to veterinary and supervisory staff.
- Maintain accurate records of animal counts, health observations, facility parameters, and husbandry activities.
- Maintain record of proper environmental conditions (temperature, pH, water chemistry, light/dark cycles).
- Clean, sanitize, and maintain fish facility rooms, tanks, tank racks, and equipment.
Animal Husbandry - Rodents
- Provide daily care for laboratory mice and rats, including feeding, watering, and cage maintenance.
- Monitor animals for signs of illness, distress, or abnormal behavior and report concerns to veterinary and supervisory staff.
- Maintain accurate records of animal counts, health observations, and husbandry activities.
- Maintain record of proper environmental conditions (temperature, humidity, light/dark cycles).
- Clean, sanitize, and maintain animal rooms, racks, and equipment.
Research Support
- Conduct procurement activities consistent with the CSUDH Animal Procurement Guidelines
- Assist with animal transfers, colony maintenance, and quarantining as needed
- Support basic experimental setups as directed by research staff (e.g., delivering assigned feed based on animal age and experimental condition)
Other duties as assigned.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to lift up to 30–40 lbs
- Ability to stand for long periods and perform repetitive tasks
- Ability to work in environments with animal allergens
Qualifications
Education
- Bachelor’s degree required; master’s degree preferred
- Biology, chemistry/biochemistry, psychology, or related scientific discipline preferred
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Ability to accurately read and record numeric information
- Ability to accurately follow precise, often complex, directions
- Strong record-keeping skills
- Punctuality
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
- Must be comfortable working with laboratory animals, especially freshwater fishes and rodents
Work Environment
- Laboratory animal vivarium
- Regular exposure to fish, rodents, bedding materials, wet environments, and cleaning chemicals
- Work schedules may include weekends, holidays, or rotating shifts, depending on facility needs
