What are the responsibilities and job description for the Pre-College Advisor/Tutor position at CSU Fullerton Auxiliary Services Corporation (ASC)?

Upward Bound (UB) provides students with the necessary support services to pursue a higher education and aims at fostering the next generation of college graduates. Our goal is to increase the number of students progressing onto higher education who are successful in the baccalaureate and beyond. Upward Bound is a federally funded TRIO program designed primarily to assist low-income and potential first-generation college students with enrolling and preparing to succeed in college, at the following Anaheim Union High School District (AUHSD) schools: Magnolia, and Savanna High School; and Santa Ana Unified School District (SAUSD) schools: Santa Ana, Saddleback, Century, and Valley High School. The program provides tailored academic advisement, academic support, and college access programming for students to ensure that they are provided with the highest-quality opportunities to be successful in college.

Under the supervision of the Upward Bound Director, the Pre-College Advisor/Tutor will work with high school students from the Santa Ana Unified School District (SAUSD), and Anaheim Union High School District (AUHSD). Pre-College Advisors/Tutors will work to prepare students to enter and succeed in postsecondary education. The primary role of the Pre-College Advisors/Tutors will be to assist students with their academic preparation through tutoring, mentorship, and encouraging students to pursue a postsecondary education. 

This position is anticipated to work 5-10 hours a week (Monday – Friday) and at least one (1) Saturday a month. Some evening hours, as required.

*Please be aware that funding for this position is awarded through a Grant/Contract over a specified period.  Employment for this position beyond the current Grant/Contract funding is contingent upon continued funding.

  • Provide academic support at least 2 days a week during after school tutoring sessions (Monday - Thursday 2:30 pm - 5:00 pm) and monthly Saturday Academies (One Saturday a month from 7:00 am - 2:00 pm) in Santa Ana, or Anaheim (depending on site assignment). 
  • Conduct structured small group and one-to-one tutoring sessions in mathematics, science, history, and English during tutoring sessions. 
  • Work collaboratively with Upward Bound Staff to develop plans to improve students' academic performance. 
  • Promote and recruit students to participate in Upward Bound activities and events. 
  • Assist the Upward Bound Staff with the planning, setup, and execution of program events and activities, including Saturday Academies.  
  • Help supervise and design activities for students during field trips. 
  • Attend mandatory monthly staff meetings, bi-annual trainings, and other trainings as assigned. 
  • Adhere to SAUSD and AUHSD policies and procedures in regard to contact with students and school personnel. 
  • Other duties as assigned
  • Ability to tutor students in at least one (1) of the following subject areas: Mathematics (Algebra I, and/or Geometry, and/or Algebra II, and/or Calculus), Science (Biology, and/or Chemistry, and/or Physics), History (World History, and/or U.S. History, and/or Government), and English. 
  • Must be willing to work a minimum of five (5) hours per week. 
  • Experience working with students from low socioeconomic backgrounds.  
  • Possess excellent written and oral communication skills.  
  • Possess good organizational skills.  
  • Must be able to work independently and take initiative.  
  • Must be reliable, responsible, punctual and self-directed. 
  • Must pass content specific assessment.   
  • Must be available to work Monday - Thursday between 2:30 pm - 5:00 pm at SAUSD Target High Schools and AUHSD Target High Schools. 
  • Availability to work one (1) Saturday a month between 7:00 am - 2:00pm at SAUSD Target site, or CSUF campus. 
  • Prior tutoring experience in Mathematics (Algebra I, and/or Geometry, and/or Algebra II, and/or Calculus), Science (Biology, and/or Chemistry, and/or Physics) is highly desired.

EDUCATION:

  • Applicant must be at least a current sophomore student in good academic standing with at least a 2.50 GPA. Candidates with a post-secondary degree are also welcome to apply.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Prolonged sitting in front of computer. Walking, talking, hearing, pulling, bending, may carry 10-15 pounds of objects/material, not exposed to extreme noise level, use hands to finger, handle, or feel, reach with hands or arms, stoop, kneel, taste or smell.
