Position Overview
We are seeking a skilled Union Sandblaster / Abrasive Blasting Technician to join our team. This position is responsible for preparing surfaces for coatings using abrasive blasting techniques in commercial, industrial, and public works environments.
This role requires a strong commitment to safety, quality workmanship, and union standards while working in both shop and field conditions.
Key Responsibilities
- Set up, operate, and maintain abrasive blasting equipment and systems
- Remove rust, coatings, and contaminants from surfaces using appropriate blasting methods
- Select proper blasting media and techniques based on surface conditions and project specifications
- Inspect completed surfaces to ensure cleanliness and profile meet coating requirements
- Perform routine equipment maintenance, including hoses, nozzles, and blast pots
- Maintain clean and safe work areas and assist with containment setup and cleanup
- Coordinate with supervisors, painters, and other trades to meet project schedules
Safety & Compliance
- Strictly follow all OSHA and jobsite safety requirements, including PPE and respiratory protection
- Understand hazards associated with abrasive blasting, including dust, noise, and high-pressure equipment
- Participate in safety meetings, training, and union compliance requirements
- Work in compliance with environmental and regulatory standards
Qualifications
- Current Union membership
- Prior experience in abrasive blasting / sandblasting operations
- Knowledge of blast equipment, surface preparation standards, and coatings prep
- Ability to work in physically demanding environments (heights, confined spaces, outdoor conditions)
- Strong understanding of jobsite safety practices and PPE usage
- Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation (preferred)
Preferred Certifications (not required but valued)
- Abrasive Blaster Certification (C7) or equivalent
- Lead-safe or hazardous coatings removal training (RRP or LBP training)
- OSHA safety certifications
