Role Overview
The Operations Manager will oversee day-to-day plant operations for a chemical blending facility supporting oilfield services. This role is responsible for ensuring safe, efficient, and cost-effective production, while maintaining quality standards, inventory control, and on-time delivery to customers (e.g., frac operations, production chemical programs). The Operations Manager is the owner of plant-level profitability, responsible for driving cost per unit down while maintaining safety, quality, and service levels.
This is a hands-on leadership role requiring strong field awareness, logistics coordination, and chemical handling expertise.
Key Responsibilities
Team Leadership
Manage plant operators, supervisors, and logistics personnel
Drive accountability, training, and performance management
Build a culture of safety, ownership, and operational discipline
Plant Operations & Production
Manage all blending, mixing, and packaging operations (liquids, powders, totes, bulk)
Ensure production targets are met with minimal downtime
Optimize batch processes, cycle times, and plant throughput
Oversee equipment performance: blend tanks, pumps, meters, and loading systems
Labor Productivity
Optimize headcount vs throughput
Reduce overtime through better scheduling
Implement productivity KPIs:
Gallons blended per operator
Loads shipped per shift
Cross-train workforce to reduce dependency bottlenecks
Health, Safety & Compliance
Enforce strict adherence to HSE standards (OSHA, EPA, DOT)
Implement and maintain SOPs for chemical handling and storage
Lead incident investigations and corrective actions
Ensure proper labeling, SDS compliance, and hazardous material handling
Supply Chain & Logistics
Coordinate inbound raw materials (methanol, acids, surfactants, etc.)
Manage outbound logistics: bulk trucks, totes, drums
Align production schedules with customer demand (frac schedules can be volatile)
Work closely with trucking vendors and field coordinators
Inventory & Cost Control
Maintain accurate inventory of raw materials and finished goods
Reduce waste, shrinkage, and off-spec product
Track and optimize cost per batch / cost per gallon
Support procurement decisions and vendor negotiations
Quality Control
Ensure all blends meet customer specifications and lab standards
Coordinate with lab/testing teams for QA/QC validation
Troubleshoot formulation or batch inconsistencies
Customer & Field Coordination
Interface with oilfield service companies (e.g., frac crews)
Ensure timely delivery aligned with field operations
Quickly respond to urgent field demands or formulation changes
Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering or related Engineering field (not mandatory with experience)
5–10 years in chemical manufacturing, blending, or oilfield operations
Strong understanding of:
Liquid blending systems
Hazardous chemicals
Bulk logistics and trucking coordination
Experience in Permian Basin operations preferred
Key Skills
Operational leadership in fast-paced environments
Strong troubleshooting and decision-making ability
Knowledge of HAZMAT, OSHA, and DOT regulations
Inventory and cost management discipline
Ability to handle unpredictable frac schedules and urgent demand spikes
Proven track record of reducing operating costs, not just running operations
