Position Summary:
Crown Utilities LLC is seeking a qualified Field Design Engineer to join our Engineering Department. This role combines both field engineering and design responsibilities, supporting the development of high-quality fiber optic network designs in accordance with client and industry standards. The position requires hands-on field data collection, pole staking, and verification of existing infrastructure, along with office-based design work. The ideal candidate will have experience in fiber optic (FTTH/OSP) design and be comfortable working in outdoor environments in varying conditions.
Key Responsibilities:
- Perform field engineering activities including site walks, data collection, and verification of existing utility infrastructure (poles, conduits, handholes, etc.)
- Stake proposed utility pole locations and fiber route alignments in accordance with project requirements and client standards
- Safely operate a company vehicle to travel to and from job sites on a daily basis
- Work outdoors in all weather conditions while collecting accurate field data, measurements, and photographs
- Develop detailed fiber optic construction drawings based on client specifications, including base maps, profiles, splice diagrams, and construction details
- Prepare complete, permit-ready fiber design packages for submission to municipalities, railroads, and federal agencies
- Support permitting activities through field verification, coordination, and documentation as needed
- Perform quality control reviews of fiber design work produced by other team members and provide constructive feedback to support continuous improvement
- Address and resolve drawing comments from clients, peers, and management in a timely and professional manner
- Maintain organized and accurate project files, including field notes and documentation, in accordance with company standards and procedures
Qualifications & Competencies:
- Proficiency in AutoCAD; CAD Design certification or an Associate’s degree in CAD Design preferred
- Working knowledge of GIS platforms such as ArcGIS, QGIS, and Google Earth
- Proficient in Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, SharePoint, and Smartsheets
- Experience with fiber optic OSP design, FTTH networks, and fielding/pole staking preferred
- Understanding of aerial and underground fiber design practices, including basic splicing concepts
- Working knowledge of NESC (National Electrical Safety Code) standards as they apply to aerial fiber design, including clearances, loading, and pole attachment requirements
- Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions and traverse uneven terrain for extended periods
- Valid driver’s license and clean driving record required
- Strong communication, analytical, and problem-solving skills
- Ability to work independently in the field and collaboratively in a team-oriented environment
Working Conditions / Environment:
This is a hybrid position with both field and office-based responsibilities.
Field work includes regular outdoor site walks and data collection in all weather conditions, traversing uneven terrain, and operating a company vehicle to travel between job sites.
Office work involves extended periods at a workstation using standard equipment such as computers and phones. The position requires close and distance vision, color vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Noise levels vary by environment — minimal in the office and variable in the field. Will be required to where standard PPE when visiting jobsites.
