What are the responsibilities and job description for the Faculty-in-Residence, Criminal Justice and Legal Studies position at Crown College?
EFFECTIVE DATE: July 1, 2026
FLSA STATUS: Exempt
HOURS WORKED: 15-20 hours weekly during regular academic terms
This is a part-time faculty position to teach undergraduate criminal justice courses on campus within the School of Liberal Arts and Education. Teaching responsibilities are assigned by the Chair of the Department of Humanities and Social Science.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED:
This position reports to the Chair of the Department of Humanities and Social Science, the Dean of the School of Liberal Arts and Education, and the Vice President of Academic Affairs.
SUPERVISORY FUNCTIONS:
None.
EQUIPMENT/JOB LOCATION:
Works from an office at Crown College. Equipment used includes, but is not limited to, personal computer and required programs, printer, fax machine, calculator, copy machines, and other equipment as the position requires.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE JOB:
· Teach two courses per normal academic term related to criminal justice. Courses may include Criminal Procedure, Criminal Statues & Enforcement, and Criminal Investigations.
· Hold an average of at least 6 office hours per week during the normal academic terms.
· Participate in department and faculty meetings as available
· Academic advising for Criminal Justice and Legal Studies students as needed
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
· Demonstrated experience and expertise in teaching criminal justice courses at the college level
· Strong interpersonal skills and positive energy regarding professional education
· Established ability to work effectively as a team member
· Demonstrate excellence in spoken, written and electronic communication skills
· Ability to integrate collegiate teaching and the Christian faith
· Experience evaluating students’ work and reporting results promptly
· Hands-on experience in the criminal justice or legal field through previous work and/or consulting experience
· Ability and willingness to stay abreast of the ever-changing criminal justice environment in order to maintain relevancy in teaching criminal justice courses to college-level students
· Skill to organize and manage multiple tasks simultaneously
· Agreement and personal alignment with the Crown College Statement of Faith and Community Covenant

- Stamina to stand for extended periods of time in classroom
- Hand and arm (or equivalent) dexterity adequate to allow for safe use of equipment and extensive use of a keyboard for data entry
- Vocal strength to speak clearly in classroom for extended periods of time
- Vision adequate for frequent viewing of computer screens and safe use and supervision of equipment and materials
- Body strength to frequently lift and/or move up to twenty-five (25) pounds
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
· Master’s level degree in criminal justice or a related field, or Bachelor degree in relevant criminal justice-related field AND a minimum of 10 years’ direct experience in a relevant criminal justice-related field
· Demonstrated teaching effectiveness
· Work experience in criminal justice, law enforcement, law, corrections, or a related field
· Experience using computer technology in the teaching/learning process
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS (in addition to the above minimum qualifications):
· A PhD or terminal degree in a related field
· 5 years of full-time teaching experience, especially in Christian higher education
· Familiarity and/or experience with standards and assessments
· Experience with academic advising/mentoring
