What are the responsibilities and job description for the Literacy Coach, Alpha - $120,000/year USD position at Crossover?
- On-site position at an Alpha campus located in Lake Forest CA, Palo Alto CA, Piedmont CA, San Francisco CA, Santa Monica CA, Greenwich CT, Chicago IL, Boston MA, New York City NY, or Chantilly VA (relocation assistance available)
- Annual salary of $120,000, distributed weekly. Full health, dental, and vision coverage begins on day one
- Daily instruction supported by AI-driven tools and adaptive learning technology
Alpha's reading instruction operates on one core principle: every minute counts. You'll run 20-minute workshops designed around each student's actual needs, not what a predetermined scope and sequence dictates. Your work includes assessing reading levels, creating targeted groups, and delivering high-impact structured literacy instruction (phonics, fluency, comprehension) to students aged 4-7 that produces measurable weekly growth. AI-powered adaptive platforms work alongside you, producing performance insights you'll apply to refine the next day's lesson before the current session wraps.
This position evolves over time. During your first year, you're immersed in classroom delivery: facilitating workshops, leading motivational activities that transform reluctant readers into enthusiastic learners, and providing detailed instructional observations to the technology team refining Alpha's AI literacy platforms. As these tools scale and your input informs their design, your influence grows beyond your immediate students. You'll contribute to building a reading system that functions across multiple campuses, scaling what works with 15 children into a framework serving hundreds.
If you've dedicated your career to demonstrating that structured literacy instruction works, and you're prepared to combine that expertise with technology that multiplies its reach, this is where your influence extends beyond a single classroom.
What You Will Be Doing
- Creating and facilitating 20-minute reading workshops based on your own diagnostic assessments of each student's reading level and instructional needs
- Applying AI-generated student performance insights to modify groupings and lesson priorities between sessions, rather than waiting for quarterly data cycles
- Leading motivational activities that cultivate intrinsic reading motivation through age-appropriate gamification and personalized goal-setting with K-2 learners
- Piloting and assessing AI literacy platforms during live instruction, then delivering structured feedback to the technology team regarding tool effectiveness and areas for improvement
- Monitoring measurable progress indicators (fluency growth, decoding level progression, accuracy rates) and applying these metrics to refine instructional methods weekly
- Implementing a scripted or commercial reading program. You identify needs and create instruction independently.
- Delivering 60-90 minute traditional literacy blocks. Your sessions are brief, targeted, and high-engagement.
- Serving exclusively struggling readers. You'll work with all K-2 students regardless of reading level.
- Operating separately from technology. AI adaptive platforms are woven into your everyday practice, not an occasional supplement.
- Waiting for end-of-quarter data reports to modify instruction. You make adjustments in real time using current session data.
Advance early elementary students to grade-level reading proficiency using adaptive, AI-supported structured literacy methods.
Basic Requirements
- Bachelor's degree (in any discipline)
- Master's degree in reading instruction OR structured literacy certification (Orton-Gillingham, Wilson Reading System, IMSE, CERI, LETRS, Neuhaus, UFLI, or equivalent)
- 2 years of full-time K-2 structured reading instruction in a school or clinical environment within the past 5 years, utilizing systematic phonics or structured literacy approaches
- Capacity to design original reading lessons and articulate your instructional methods and content clearly, without dependence on a published curriculum
- Availability to work on-site at an Alpha campus (Lake Forest CA, Palo Alto CA, Piedmont CA, San Francisco CA, Santa Monica CA, Greenwich CT, Chicago IL, Boston MA, New York City NY, or Chantilly VA; relocation assistance provided)
- Readiness to integrate AI and adaptive learning platforms into daily practice and adjust as these tools develop
- Legal authorization to work in the United States without requiring visa sponsorship
- Familiarity with diagnostic reading assessments (such as DRA, DIBELS, AIMSweb) used to create differentiated instructional groups
- Documented record of measurable student reading improvements you can articulate with concrete data (for example, advanced 12 students from Level C to Level G within one semester)
- Prior collaboration with edtech teams, product developers, or instructional designers on tool creation
- Experience in a startup, micro-school, or alternative education setting where you developed systems instead of following established ones
