The Opportunity: The Heart of the School

In Ferguson-Florissant, our libraries are the engines of inquiry. We are looking for a dynamic, forward-thinking Library Media Specialist to transform our middle school library into a vibrant center of discovery. You aren't just a "book curator"—you are a digital navigator, a co-teacher, and a champion for intellectual freedom. You are the professional who ensures that every student has the skills to find, evaluate, and use information to change their world.

As part of the FFSD "New Chapter," you will lead a space that celebrates diverse voices and high-tech exploration. If you believe the library is the most exciting room in the building, your next chapter starts here.

Role Summary

As a Middle School Librarian, you will inspire and support students and staff by providing access to a diverse range of resources and instruction. Working in a student-centered environment, you will manage the library media center’s operations, curate a collection that reflects our community's brilliance, and teach essential information literacy skills. You will work collaboratively with classroom teachers to integrate research skills and technology into the curriculum, ensuring every student becomes a savvy, critical thinker in the digital age.

Why You’ll Succeed (Qualifications)

  • Certified Professional: Valid Missouri Teaching Certification in Library Media Specialist (K-12).
  • Degree Requirements: Bachelor’s Degree required; Master’s in Library Science (MLS/MLIS) highly preferred.
  • The "Literacy Leader": You have a deep passion for young adult literature and a proven ability to match the right book with the right student at the right time.
  • Tech-Forward Educator: You are proficient in library management systems, digital databases, and 21st-century instructional tools (AI, coding, multimedia production).
  • Equity Champion: You are committed to building a "Windows and Mirrors" collection—where students see themselves reflected and gaze into the lives of others.
  • Relational Expert: You thrive on collaboration, acting as a "consultant" to teachers and a mentor to students in their quest for knowledge.

Your Impact (Key Duties)

  • Cultivate Curiosity: Design and lead lessons on research strategies, copyright ethics, and media literacy to help students navigate a complex information landscape.
  • Curate Excellence: Manage the selection, purchasing, and weeding of a high-interest collection that supports the curriculum and independent reading.
  • Co-Teach for Success: Partner with classroom teachers to design inquiry-based projects that utilize library resources and digital databases.
  • Transform the Space: Create an inviting, inclusive environment that supports individual study, collaborative groups, and "Maker" activities.
  • Promote a Reading Culture: Lead book clubs, author visits, and literacy challenges that make reading the "coolest" thing to do in middle school.

Your Leadership Partners

  • Primary Support: Building Principal
  • Instructional Support: District Library Coordinators and Secondary Instructional Coaches

The Logistics of Your Success

  • Classification: Exempt, Certified Staff
  • Work Year: 10-Month Academic Calendar (187 Contract Days)
  • Salary: Based on the Teacher Salary Schedule, determined by experience and education level.
  • Benefits: Full-time Eligibility (Medical, Dental, Vision, & PSRS/PEERS Retirement).

The FFSD Advantage: Total Rewards & Support

We don't just hire librarians; we invest in information architects.

  • Innovation Resources: Budgetary support for collection development and access to cutting-edge digital resources.
  • Professional Growth: Tuition reimbursement and district-provided PD focused on the future of school libraries and digital citizenship.
  • Health & Heart: 100% district-paid medical, dental, and vision plans, plus access to our Ferg-Flor Care district health clinic.
