Extended School Year Speech Language Pathologist 

 

Job Summary:

The Extended School Year Speech Language Pathologist develops and provides specialized instruction to meet the unique needs of students with disabilities; Evaluates and assesses student progress against instructional objectives; follows IDEA-mandated due process procedures and functions as Case Manager to assigned IEP students.

 

Qualifications:

Professional Educator License (PEL) or eligible for an appropriate license

Master’s Degree in Speech and Language 

Bilingual preferred

 

Evaluation:

The performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with the provisions of the Board’s policy on the Evaluation of Certified.

 

Reports to:

Summer School Principal and Director of Special Services 

 

Terms of Employment:

This is a part-time, hourly position for four weeks, from June 2nd to June 26th, with an additional four days of planning and professional development to be determined.

 

  • Hours: 7:30 a.m. - 12:00 p.m., Monday through Thursday
  • Compensation: $45 per hour
  • This position does not include benefits

Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Provide Direct Speech and Language Services – Deliver individualized and group therapy sessions to support students' communication needs in alignment with their IEP goals.
  2. Assess and Monitor Student Progress – Conduct ongoing assessments and collect data to evaluate student progress, adjusting interventions to ensure goal attainment.
  3. Develop and Implement Individualized Therapy Plans – Create and execute therapy plans that address articulation, language development, fluency, voice, and social communication needs.
  4. Collaborate with Educators and Support Staff – Work closely with teachers, special education staff, and paraprofessionals to integrate speech and language strategies into classroom instruction.
  5. Support Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) – Provide guidance on the use of AAC devices and other communication supports to enhance student participation and independence.
  6. Facilitate Social Communication Development – Implement strategies to help students develop pragmatic language skills, including turn-taking, conversation skills, and understanding social cues.
  7. Communicate with Families and Caregivers – Maintain open communication with parents and guardians, providing updates on student progress and strategies for continued support at home.
  8. Maintain Compliance with IEPs and Documentation – Ensure all therapy sessions, progress reports, and IEP goals are documented accurately and in compliance with state and federal regulations.
  9. Adapt Therapy to Summer Program Structure – Modify therapy approaches to fit the shorter extended school year format while maintaining meaningful student progress.
  10. Participate in Multidisciplinary Team Meetings – Engage in team discussions to review student needs, collaborate on intervention strategies, and support a holistic approach to student development.
  11. Perform other duties as assigned.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

The role of a Speech-Language Pathologist (SLP) requires physical stamina and mobility to support students in various educational settings effectively. SLPs must be able to sit, stand, and move throughout classrooms, therapy rooms, and other learning environments for extended periods. The position involves frequent use of fine motor skills to manipulate therapy materials, operate assistive communication devices, and document student progress. Clear verbal communication requires strong vocal projection and articulation to effectively model speech and language skills. Additionally, SLPs may need to assist students with physical disabilities, which can involve bending, kneeling, or providing light physical support. The role also demands the ability to manage and transport therapy materials, such as visual aids, speech devices, and documentation tools. SLPs must be able to respond quickly to students’ needs, ensuring a safe and supportive therapy environment. Adaptability to various classroom and school settings, including working with students in small groups or one-on-one, is essential.
