Position Title: Paraeducator
Location: Building Level
Position Description: The paraeducator will work with a variety of students with disabilities. This involves supporting students in all aspects of their day and the ability to work in diverse classroom settings under the direction of the special/and or regular education teachers which may include therapy activities, toileting, lifting, field trips, life skill instruction, and all other duties as assigned by the teacher and/or building principal.
Qualifications: An associate degree, two year of college (60 credits), or have taken and passed the ParaPro Assessment. Experience in working with children is preferred. Ability to relate to students and staff in a positive and effective manner; to work with special needs children ages 3-21 which includes physically, emotionally and cognitively disabled students; to acquire skills to operate audio-visual and technological equipment; and to follow through on direction provided by the teacher to acquire skills needed to support the educational program for the students they are working with.
Responsibilities: Assists teachers by performing duties associated with classroom instruction, behavioral intervention and supporting the educational program of the students. Receives oral and written instruction from the case managers. Follows student IEP, 504, and behavior plans. Receives information from teacher or other certified staff member and provides feedback to the teacher concerning students’ needs and progress. Reinforces subject matter with students according to teachers’ lesson plans. Assists students, individually or in groups with lesson assignments. Provides physical and instructional assistance to students in regular and special education classes in a variety of academic, vocational and other activities. Assists teachers in the supervision of students on field trips, if appropriate. Assists teachers in the preparation of materials for instruction. Arrives promptly to assigned location May sometimes monitor the classroom in absence of the teacher, as stated in the contract. May operate audio-visual and technological equipment. May be required to provide physical assistance to children including lifting, toileting, diapering, dressing, feeding, etc. May perform related duties as required, based on the educational needs of the students. Maintains confidentiality of student information both in and out of school Follows all other responsibilities as outlined in the CPS Paraeducator Handbook
Reports to: Building Principal and District Administration
Terms of Employment: As per the AFSCME contract - work year shall be at least 184 school days
