Design Build Electrical Estimator

Job Summary:

We are seeking a highly analytical and forward-thinking Design / Build Electrical Estimator to drive our preconstruction and competitive bidding efforts. Unlike traditional "spec" estimators, you will excel in the conceptual phase of a project, creating accurate cost models from minimal information, rough sketches, or written narratives.

In this role, you will bridge the gap between design and budget. You will collaborate directly with preconstruction managers, electrical engineers, clients, and operational teams to develop comprehensive, conceptual budgets, value-engineering strategies, and detailed hard-bid proposals for complex commercial, industrial, or renewable energy projects.

Key Responsibilities

 Conceptual & Design-Build Estimating

• Generate detailed, conceptual budget models from preliminary design narratives, performance specifications, or early-stage schematic drawings (30% or less design completion).
• Perform comprehensive material takeoffs and labor risk assessments for all aspects of electrical construction, including low-voltage systems, distribution infrastructure, and emergency power systems.
• Formulate value-engineering alternatives that offer structural or financial cost savings to clients without compromising project quality, code compliance, or performance.
• Review architectural, structural, mechanical, and civil drawings to identify and mitigate scope gaps, constructability hurdles, and cross-trade overlapping costs.

Vendor Management & Market Analysis

• Draft clear scopes of work to solicit and analyze competitive quotes from key subcontractors, equipment manufacturers, and material vendors.
• Monitor volatile market indicators, commodity pricing shifts (copper, steel, aluminum), and supply chain lead times to build accurate escalation contingencies into long-term bids.
• Negotiate vendor pricing strategies to optimize company margins and secure priority fulfillment agreements for won contracts.

Cross-Functional Collaboration

• Lead project hand-off meetings to seamlessly transition newly won projects from the preconstruction estimating stage to Project Managers and Field Superintendents.
• Partner closely with internal design engineering teams to ensure our estimated labor and material allowances perfectly match structural code mandates and regional client expectations.
• Represent the firm during preliminary client alignment reviews, target-value design workshops, and formal proposal presentations.

Required Qualifications & Hard Skills

• Education: Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Electrical Engineering, or a related discipline. Equivalent hands-on industry experience (such as a Journeyman/Master Electrician license with field experience) is highly valued.
• Experience: Minimum of 4–7 years of direct experience in electrical estimating, with a dedicated focus on Design/Build and Design/Assist delivery methods.
• Technical Knowledge: Comprehensive, fluent understanding of the National Electrical Code (NEC), local building regulations, and OSHA safety standards.
• Analytical Ability: Strong mastery of conceptual pricing logic, system-by-system pricing structures, and historical cost data trends.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience estimating for high-growth sectors such as industrial manufacturing, or renewable energy distribution (e.g. EV charging hubs).
