What are the responsibilities and job description for the Child Advocacy Center Advocate position at Crime Victims Assistance Center Inc?

CAC Advocate is responsible to provide neutral support and advocacy to child and youth victims of sexual abuse, physical abuse, commercial sexual exploitation, and witnesses to violence; and their non-offending family members involved with the Broome County Child Advocacy Center.

Responsibilities include:

  • Build rapport and work directly with youth identified by the Safe Harbour program.
  • Maintain strict standards of confidentiality
  • Support, accompaniment, and advocacy of children and the non-offending caretakers while at the Child Advocacy Center.
  • Assist families in filing for victim compensation (OVS claims).
  • Document referral information and all services into agency database.
  • Maintain and update case records in agency database.
  • Assist with training sessions for community professionals regarding Child Advocacy Center operations and the Safe Harbour program.
  • Assists with community and school-based education on child abuse prevention.
  • Delivers outreach programming and leads youth support groups both in school settings and community locations.
  • Frequent interaction and ongoing communication with multidisciplinary team members.
  • Development and maintenance of victims’ rights and personal safety materials.
  • Attendance and participation at professional meetings.

Other duties as assigned may include, but are not limited to:

  • Support and participate in community organized committees and appropriate CVAC fund-raising activities.
  • Provide daytime back up coverage as well as after-hours and weekend on-call accompaniment for adult and child victims as per agency rotation schedule.

A Bachelor’s Degree in a human service field is preferred, but candidates with an Associate’s Degree with professional experience will be considered. Previous experience with law enforcement, social work, mental health, healthcare, and/or experience as a trainer/educator is preferred. Must have two years experience in direct human service.

  • Valid NY State driver’s license, transportation and insurance required.
  • Microsoft Office computer skills required.
  • Exemplary oral and written skills required.

Must agree to complete 40-hour NY State Dept. of Health rape crisis counselor training and an additional ten hours of ongoing, professional education each subsequent calendar year.
