The Materials Transfer Vehicle (MTV), commonly known as the Shuttle Buggy, is a critical component of our asphalt paving operations. The MTV Operator ensures continuous, uniform asphalt flow from haul trucks to the paver by safely and efficiently operating the machine in various roadway and jobsite conditions. This role supports high‑quality paving results, production efficiency, and safe jobsite practices.

Key Responsibilities (Essential Duties And Functions)

  • Operate the Materials Transfer Vehicle (Shuttle Buggy) to assist with asphalt paving operations.
  • Maintain continuous, even flow of material from haul trucks into the paver while minimizing segregation.
  • Communicate effectively with haul truck drivers, paver operators, and ground crew to ensure smooth operations.
  • Monitor machine performance and material temperature, reporting any abnormalities immediately.
  • Perform daily equipment inspections, including fluid checks, greasing, cleaning, and basic maintenance.
  • Follow all safety standards, traffic control requirements, and work zone guidelines.
  • Assist paving crew with general labor tasks as needed when equipment is idle.
  • Document equipment issues and coordinate with mechanics for repairs.
  • Work in variable conditions, including heat, dust, uneven terrain, and high-traffic areas.
  • Support company goals for quality control, production efficiency, and customer satisfaction.
  • Other duties as assigned by the paving foreman.

Qualifications

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.

Education/Experience

  • High School diploma or general education degree (GED) required.
  • Previous experience operating asphalt paving equipment is strongly preferred.
  • Experience with Materials Transfer Vehicles, Shuttle Buggies, or similar equipment is a plus.
Work Requirements

  • Must be 18 years of age or older.
  • Must pass pre-employment physical, drug screen and criminal background check.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license and be able to safely drive a vehicle.
  • Report to the office dressed appropriately and ready to begin work at the designated start time.
  • Strict adherence to safety requirements and procedures as outlined in the Employee Handbook.
  • Willingness to work in a team environment and assist co-workers or supervisors with other duties as required.
  • Individuals are required to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) in designated operations and production areas as stated by OSHA and/or MSHA.
  • Compliance with and strong ability to research all OSHA and/or MSHA regulations.
Knowledge/Skill Requirements

  • Strong problem-solving skills are preferred.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Ability to perform under deadline pressure.
  • Ability to meet attendance schedule with dependability and consistency.
  • High standard of ethics, integrity, and trust.
  • Understanding of asphalt paving operations and material flow.
  • Ability to read and understand work instructions, safety guidelines, and site plans.
  • Strong situational awareness and communication skills.
  • Mechanical aptitude for basic equipment troubleshooting.

Physical Requirements

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

  • Job requires climbing, stooping, bending, squatting, frequent lifting of extensions chutes, stretching, sitting/driving, shifting gears, and covering/uncovering load when applicable.
  • Able to stand, walk, use hands and fingers to manipulate objects or controls, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, talk and hear.
  • May require sitting for extended periods of time.
  • Vision abilities (with correction) include close, distance, peripheral, depth, and the ability to focus.
  • Must be able to lift hood of truck unassisted; up to 50 lbs. on an on-going basis.
  • Able to climb in and out of truck 3-4 steps (elevated 4 feet into cab). (Could be in and out of truck 20-30 times per day).
Work Environment

  • While performing the duties of the job, the employee may be exposed to fumes or airborne particles and toxic or caustic chemicals.
  • The employee is occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts; high, precarious places; outside weather conditions; and risk of electrical shock or burn.
  • The noise level in some areas of the work environment may be loud but is typically moderate
