JOB SUMMARY
Aid in the maintenance and repair of sewer lift stations and related equipment.
Responsibilities/Tasks
- Aids in the maintenance and repair of the City's sewer lift stations, odor scrubbers, and collection system.
- Removes and installs pumps; aids in performing maintenance and repairs on mechanical systems and pump control panels.
- Aids in troubleshooting electrical, mechanical, hydraulic, and pneumatic systems.
- Operates several special vehicles (i.e„ crane trucks, VACTOR tanker truck).
- Operates standard hand-held manual, electrical, and gas-powered tools and equipment.
- Operates specialized trade-specific tools and equipment.
- Maintains and ensures the safe operating condition of equipment, tools, and vehicles.
- Performs record maintenance duties (i.e., work orders, materials and supplies utilized, labor required, maintenance logs).
- Reports any detected deterioration, repair, and maintenance needs to the supervisor.
- Conducts traffic control; ensures vehicles, staff, and work zone traffic safety.
- Performs general tasks of other trades as needed.
- Performs related duties as required.
- High school diploma or GED; preferred (2) years of mechanical or related experience; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
- Requires a valid, class "A" commercial driver's license with a Tanker endorsement within (6) six months of hire. While obtaining a CDL permit within 90 Days of hire.
- Water and sewer experience preferred.
- Must be physically able to operate trucks and various handheld manual and gas-powered tools and equipment, where excellent eye/hand/foot coordination is essential for safe and productive operations.
- Must be able to exert over 100 pounds of force occasionally, or 25 to 50 pounds of force frequently, or 10 to 20 pounds of force constantly to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects.
- Physical demands are in excess of sedentary work and require standing and walking for prolonged periods of time.
- Must be able to ascend/descend ladders, stairs, ramps, and the like, using feet and legs or hands and arms.
- Must be able to maintain body equilibrium to prevent falling when walking, standing, or crouching on narrow, slippery surfaces.
- Must be able to bend Legs at knees to come to rest on knee(s).
- Must be able to reach, extending hand(s) in any directions.
- Must be able to handle, seize, hold, grasp, turn, or otherwise work with hand(s).
- Must be able to stand and walk for extended periods.
- Tasks include considerable bending, stooping, and climbing.
- Must be able to work for sustained periods of exposure to outside atmospheric conditions. (i.e., hot, cold, sunny, rainy).
- Must be able to work for short or sustained periods of time, exposed to a shaking object or surface.
- Is exposed to conditions such as fumes, noxious odors, dust, mist, gases, and poor ventilation that affect the respiratory system, eyes, or skin.
- Is exposed to possible bodily injury from mechanical parts of equipment, tools, or machinery.
- Is exposed to possible injury from electrical shock.
- Is exposed to possible bodily injury from explosions.
- Is exposed to possible bodily injury from chemicals/toxic agents, pathogenic substances, and hazardous wastes.
- Is exposed to loud noise levels.
- May be subject to confined spaces, rodents, and insects.
- Interpersonal Communication: Requires the ability to speak and/or signal people to convey or exchange information; includes receiving assignments and/or directions. Requires the ability to tactfully and effectively interact with the public and with co-workers.
- Language Ability: Must be able to communicate effectively in Standard English and to convey information to others.
- Intelligence: Requires the ability to apply principles of common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions; to deal with problems involving concrete variables in situations where standardization exists; to make independent judgments in the absence of a supervisor; to acquire knowledge of topics related to primary occupation,
- Verbal Aptitude: Requires the ability to record and deliver information, to explain procedures, and to follow oral and written instructions. Must be able to communicate effectively with co-workers, the public, and supervisors.
- Form/Spatial Aptitude: Requires the ability to inspect items for proper length, width, depth, and shape.
