The Sr. Drilling Engineer will be responsible for working directly with the Vice President of Well Delivery on the well design and the technical execution of drilling projects. This role will be responsible for completing assignments independently and under general supervision including preparing project timelines, cost estimates and procedures, reviewing reports and records for accuracy, tracking project costs, and participate in post project analysis. This role will have both the leadership, technical and communication skills to interface with both field and office-based staff and will also be self-motivated, team oriented, and results focused.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Prepare project timelines, cost estimates and procedures, review reports and records for accuracy, track project costs, verify invoices and may participate in post project analysis
  • Prepares AFE proposals and detailed procedures for drilling operations
  • Requires the coordination of many contractors – this must be optimized to maximize capital efficiency and to minimize time between well spud and date of first production
  • Assume project management responsibilities: identify, recommend, and implement better work alternatives and business processes
  • Assist in development and execution of programs for non-critical operations and possibly some critical operations
  • Understand and provide oversight to ensure compliance with company HSE policies
  • Prepare field reviews, wellbore schematics, cost estimates and procedures for downhole and surface operations; analysis of production and pressure data; basic understanding of reservoir engineering and economic evaluations
  • Works with the drilling team to negotiate vendor pricing for capital drilling program – requires obtaining and analyzing contractor bids.
  • Provide technical input and support in the development and administration of plans, policies and programs to optimize goals and assets
  • Develop well plans and direct the daily activities for horizontal, directional, and vertical drilling operations within both geographically and geologically diverse areas
  • Compile, review, and analyze cost and performance data associated with drilling activities to optimize drilling operations and cost reduction
  • Conduct self-directed preliminary research to determine optimum drilling design and operations parameters based on offset data and other operator information
  • Provide innovative technical support to drilling team to address specific issues which arise during planning and during operations phases
  • Generate cost estimates and performs risk analysis for horizontal and vertical air and/or fluid drilling operations
  • Complete routine and moderately complex drilling engineering assignments independently
  • Collaborate with regulatory and geological/geophysical groups to construct appropriate well plans and Applications for Permits to Drill
  • Work with the Well-site Supervisors and contractors to execute well plans in the safest and most cost-effective manner
  • Provide leadership in promoting a safe and environmentally responsible drilling operation
  • Assure all operations are conducted according to respective regulatory requirements
  • Generate End of Well reports
  • Maintains professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops, reviewing professional publications, and establishing personal networks.

Required Experience & Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Petroleum Engineering a plus
  •  5 years of industry experience in drilling operations with 3 years of onshore. Unconventional drilling experience working in a multi-discipline team environment 
  • Experience working closely with multiple technical disciplines
  • Practical experience or training in risk analysis
  • Proficiency in reliability and maintenance software
