The Automation & Electrical Technician is responsible for the safe installation, maintenance, and repair of electrical and automation systems supporting oilfield production operations. This role requires a strong working knowledge of industry‑standard equipment, regulations, materials, and tools used in modern oilfield automation environments.
Principal Duties And Responsibilities
Work is normally performed outdoors where exposure to conditions of extreme heat/cold, fumes and gases is common. Noise level is moderate to loud and includes sounds of construction, equipment operations, trucks and like equipment. Job hazards include working in normal light and heavy construction activities and working around pressured propane, water, electricity, and waste lines under all weather conditions. May work in areas where H2S is present. Must be available to be On-Call.
Physical Demands
Work normally requires finger dexterity and eye-hand coordination to operate a computer keyboard at a moderate skill level. Work may require frequent pushing, pulling, or carrying 50 to 75-pound objects such as tools, equipment work operations. Work involves standing and walking most of the time but will also involve sitting and driving for extended periods, sometimes over rough terrain.

- Install, maintain, and troubleshoot automation equipment used in field production operations.
- Communicate effectively with operations teams regarding equipment status, system performance, and automation needs.
- Monitor and diagnose issues within SCADA systems to identify and correct equipment, sensor, or communication failures.
- Coordinate with automation contractors to ensure proper installation, quality workmanship, and cost-effective solutions.‑effective solutions.
- Evaluate existing automation systems and recommend improvements to enhance reliability and efficiency.
- Troubleshoot, program, and repair field PLCs, HMIs/displays, and RTUs.
- Respond to service calls to repair, reset, or restore communications and telemetry systems.
- Train field personnel on the proper use and basic troubleshooting of automation equipment.
- Configure, maintain, and troubleshoot industrial communication networks, including Ethernet based systems.‑based systems.
- Work with common oilfield communication protocols such as TCP/IP, Modbus (RTU/TCP), and MQTT for data acquisition and device integration.
- Perform additional duties as assigned by the Automation & Electrical Foreman.
- Education: High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Experience: Minimum of 5 years of oilfield experience, including at least 3 years in automation and electrical roles.
- Licensing: Licensed Electrician is a plus.
- Strong knowledge of oilfield automation systems, electrical equipment, and communication technologies.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Outlook).
- Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to collaborate effectively across all levels of the organization.
- Self‑motivated, ethical, and capable of working independently with minimal supervision.
- Flexible, cooperative, and able to adapt to changing operational priorities.
- Demonstrated interest in automating repetitive tasks and leveraging data from multiple sources to improve operational performance.
- Must be self-motivated, demonstrate strong ethics and character, be able to work with minimal supervision, and be flexible and cooperative with co-workers.
